Hi,
I recently purchased a Pioneer VP-1000 and the seller shipped it without a transit screw in place. It looks like the pinion gear (VNL-028) has shattered. I know Pioneer no longer stocks them, but is there anywhere else to look? Besides trying to purchase another player?

Sounds like you will need to try and fabricate the part, can you find something at a hardware store that could work along with epoxy??|

That same pinion gear is used in all the Pioneer built HeNe tube players except the PR-7820. If you can find any of the following, they have a compatible gear - which is much stronger to boot!

Pioneer:

LD-V1001 (Japan)
LD-V10 (Japan)
LD-600 (Japan)
LD-1000 (Japan)

Magnavox:
VC-8010

Sylvania:
VP-7200

Ethan Gallo now makes these gears. I've got one installed in (one of) my VP-1000 and it works great!
