I'm awaiting delivery of a Pioneer CLD-D703 that, according to the seller, is in "brand new condition" and "never used." It appears to have been in storage for the past 25 years (it's in its original box, which appears clean). I'm skeptical of the functionality/reliability of new old stock (NOS), especially a "brand new" machine that's 25 years old, yet I'm still optimistic that it will work when I plug it in.

My big question is how should I approach testing a NOS Pioneer D703?
If this player powers up, are there any "exercises" I should do to test the player's functionality and ensure proper operation, other than hook it up to the TV and spin a disc? I assume that a rubber belt might be one of the first things to give way. What should I be on the lookout for when starting up a 25-year old D703 for the first time? Do I need to lubricate the player and, if so, how?

Thank you!

Marc

Open it up, power it on, insert the disc and press play.
If it works you are fine, if not then you will need to either ship it off for repair or diagnose yourself.

Nothing special to be done other than try it out.
This isn't like an old 1 stroke engine, you don't need to prime it or anything.
Good luck

If you can not play it

Examine the deterioration of the rubber of the tray
It may be stiffening

No problem, keep us posted.
All should be fine other than any rubber stuff.
But only one way to find out, try it first.

Good luck

Thank you, again, powerofld and rein-o! I powered it up and it works like a charm, nice and smooth. So far, so good.

Time to spin some Criterions (Dr. No looks remarkably fresh, and the colors in the title sequence are sharp and solid).

Regardless what people say about issues with CLV Smear on the 703 & 704, still think these players are great performers and the cosmetic appearance of them were right on target (never was a big fan of the “arch look” on the 701 & 702).

Hope you have fun with your 703 and may it give you years of enjoyment since it literally is a 25 year old baby. :)

Thank you, ldfan! The machine has proved to be smooth and durable...so far. Everything works the way it should. And the image produced is brighter than my DVL-919 (although there is much to like about that unit, too). I can see why legions of LD connoisseurs swear by the 703/704 series.

One disc I have yet to spin on the 703 is the CAV of Tron. That's on my to-do list for tomorrow.

I’m not sure I actually know what the smear is they are talking about. I’ve only ever had Pioneers though so I don’t know what to compare them too. Is it something you need a giant LCD and $10k worth of stuff to see or did people complain about it in the 90s?

I never complained about it in the past, when I saw smear I always thought it was a poor transfer, as its usually from the older pressings anyway.

I’m assuming you mean the “Archive Collection” edition :). I love that edition even though it doesn’t have a 5.1 track. The video mastering is excellent and the PCM audio with Pro-Logic 2 is very robust. It should be a good test for the player.

What’s crazy is that I never noticed it until someone on-line made a big deal about and even after that I still didn’t notice it all that much and nor did it really bother me. I guess some people are very particular.

In any case, they say that 703/704 are quite excessive for smearing so I guess I’ll pull my 703 out of storage soon and compare it to my newly acquired 97 to see if I can notice any obvious differences.
