I recently acquired a DVL-V888 with a manufacture date of January 1998. This is the first DVL player and "newest" unit I've owned. After a few weeks I'm noticing it has a noticeably different picture than the CLD-D704 I've been driving for the past few years. Its also much quieter which I love. The picture looks more processed but also more modern than that of the 704. Less noisy overall. Maybe a tad softer. This is all using the composite out of both players.

Going from a CLD-D406 to the CLD-D704 had a similar look and feel vs the difference between the 704/V888.

I don't normally use the built-in noise reduction on the 704 so I was wondering if the V888 uses some level of NR as a default or not. There doesn't seem to be anything mentioned in the manual or the menus.

On the 704 there are buttons on the player and the remote for the VNR. The V888 has a dedicated button for VNR but the manual says its for VCD and DVD but not LD. Maybe I'm wrong on that? The menu options are sparse.

I'm set to the "Cinema" mode on the DVL-V888 as opposed to standard if that makes any difference.

Are the DVL players based on the CLD-D6xx series? Do they have more modern comb filters? Maybe just newer updated chips for the video section? Whats the deal?

Not sure about the V888, but I do know that the DVL-700 had DNR and an adjustable comb filter if you got the firmware update.

Interesting. So then how would you control those FW updated features on the 700? Assuming the remote and faceplate didn't have dedicated buttons for those features added later.

Also, how did the FW update happen? Send in your player? Never heard of a FW update for LD.

Thanks!

The firmware update for the 700 that I had was done by Duncan at Laserdisc Service/Bayview Electronics (before he destroyed his reputation.)

The conrtol of the VNR and comb filter was a little wonky, as you had to do it before you start playing a movie in a hidden menu at the startup of the player.

I would hazard to guess that this feature is there on the 700 because it is basically the same machine as the Elite DVL-90, but they disabled the VNR in the 700 to make the 90 worth the extra $$$

The different DVL units had different comb filter/NR boards. Only some of them have the NR chip - the V888, 919, and (LD-)PAL/NTSC models do not.

With the V888, you get a CD-G/LD-G decoder instead.

Thanks, that's what I'm after. Do you happen to know which comb filter it uses or how it (the comb filter) compares to other models like the NEC / Mitsubishi chips on later models?
