Nope. This has to do with your older tech meeting your newer tech. Welcome to the wonderful world of LD with your new TV meeting old player

Lethal Weapon 1 - 3 all freeze fine when paused. Power Rangers Turbo, Arachnophobia and a few others like to jitter between frames when paused. Back to the future 2, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Groundhog day and a few others have jitter, but it's VERY tiny. you really have to stare at the picture. -- I've also noticed Lethal weapon 3 looks really bad compared to my CLD-D503. Hmm.

ldfan wrote: The jitter issue appears indicative of the display. I never had jitter problems when my players were running through a CRT.
On my two Samsung LCD TVs’, I will get jitter on still frames and they will vary on how hard the jitter is depending on the frame it is on. Oddly, my Sony LED display has no jitter whatsoever but not sure if it’s because I run the LD through my Denon AV Receiver that might be processing the video (I actually doubt it and think my Sony just processes analog video better). Currently, my composite input is taken up by my Sega Saturn. For LD, i'm currently running it through an ELGATO capture card with composite in and then outputting it via HDMI with a MCable. I'll go back to standard composite once i'm done playing lol. Like i said above, in my case the jitter seems to vary from title but the display definitely has something to do with it. But my rear projection television isn't modern nor old. It's kind of.. in between and also a dead form factor of television.

I think the only major tape-based format that could actually do a (relatively) decent freeze frame was Video 2000. Honestly speaking, It depends on the type of VHS VCR one had that makes a difference on freeze frame. Beginning around the mid 80’s and then taking over completely toward the formats end, a four head VCR utilizing a “double azimuth” arrangement (SP and EP heads spaced next to each other on the drum instead of 90 degrees apart) could attain a very stable still picture along with a good forward slow motion with virtually no drop out lines. Also, around the early to mid 90’s, we also saw some really innovative new head designs that completely eliminated drop out lines even during FF and REW scan. Mitsubishi did it with their HS-U82 that adopted two additional heads and JVC later out did them with their “Dynamic Drum” design that I believe changed the angle of the entire drum to compensate for head angle.

signofzeta wrote: There were VHS decks made with the same digital field memory tech as LD players. I had one from NEC. It could freeze anything going through it, even live TV. It never became ubiquitous though, like it did with LD.
Pro Tip: If you record your movies in SLP (EP) format they will look bad but the still frames will be way better because there is more duration on the section of tape that your head is currently spinning on. I figured this out because I used to copy rentals a lot and the original had at least %50 noise when paused but my dubs would look pretty good. I remember that in the movie Ghostbusters the clearest picture of a proton pack is on the cover of a magazine during a montage. I paused it there so I could draw it. Did the same with Transformers The Movie a lot.
I used to freeze frame a lot of stuff as a kid. Big animation/SFX analyzer from the SD era. Do you know any specific models? This is something I would be interested in acquiring and could pretty easily fund it by selling another VCR or two. rein-o wrote: I think there really needs to be some type of book to explain or refresh people on this stuff before they start posting and then get all others riled up to get a 3 page topic of nonsense trying to figure out your "issue" when we are fooled into thinking you know what you are talking about since you grew up with a "303" player. But otoh the forum activity is exciting.

How old are you vextrex? Its almost like you really never had LD and a 3030 back in the day and are just dragging us down this rabbit hole when you find some type of quirk that nobody else wants to see or care about from your "new to me hobby"
Sounds like if its not what I mentioned above you are getting the jitter on the CAV discs when they are improperly pulled down from 3.2

Good luck and enjoy collecting LDs. You're free to leave the topic, then. Nobody needs your negativity. I'm not dragging anyone down; There is no crime about asking questions. Replying is optional and your reply was purely voluntary.
