It looks like most of gears (even slightly worn) should not be a problem. The missing tooth on the tray could be an issue but maybe not since it’s just needed for loading / unloading.

The issue, at least to me, is that you just need to extract the tray completely so you can re-align it with the rest of the system. I re-installed a tray incorrectly before on my CLD-59 after a belt change and it was getting half way stuck as well. It was difficult to remove and I admit I had to force it out at some point but thank goodness nothing broke. I found that I had re-inserted the tray in a slight angle that caused the misalignment but once I got it right it was fine again.

Spent ages on the unit today ... not sure if Im progressing...learnt a lot more though...still more questions than results atm!

I understand at least some of the mechanism now much better..however as Ive experienced these units are complex enough to trip me up over and over.

Today I disassembled the loading tray mechanism and removed it and the servo mechanism from the chassis.

Carefully disassembled the loading mech plastic gears etc....obviously the black plastic cam is a crucial piece and has to be put back in the correct position taking into account switch levers and their pins that run in the cams tracks...as well as the top sliding plastic piece which also has a pin that sits in a cam groove.

Eventually managed to get the tray to slide in and out unhindered.....and then reassembled the whole unit to test.

When I turned on the unit made a noise whining noise . When i press open the display says 'open' but the tray did not move..the tray motor did not try to move at all....again though a noise can be heard...looking around I could see the laser pickup gears try to move the laser assembly along its track... but seemingly couldnt.

Thats where Im at... looking like another disassembly to try and figure out why ...not sure why the laser pickup on the rail is not moving.

Can anyone confirm that the laser assembly has to be in the right position before the tray motor would start ? this is what Im hoping is wrong stopping the tray motor to start...otherwise I have more of a problem than just the movement of the laser!

Also can anyone confirm that the laser should be able to be moved along the track manually by rotating its gears? At the moment its stuck and will not budge manually either. (I Should have checked this before reassembly !!)

Its hard to know if the operation of the tray is correct when you dont know what a working 703/770//704 tray operation lookslike (when you push it in and out manually)...I can describe whats happening here...you can pull the tray in and out now fully...and the laser tray does not raise or lower....is this correct ?

Thanks for any info and help !

UPDATE NEWSFLASH :)

Tray mech now working nicely!

Laser now moving along track easily!

Player now playing "Stargate" Laserdisc :)

However...... When the disc spins up...it sounds like its slipping or struggling? First time I put the disc in it spun up then stopped without playing....now its playing.

Tried selecting B side of disc...noise at rear did not work ?? another jam somewhere perhaps !

So I think the grip ring on the spindle is worn hence the slipping sound on spin up....so going to need to fix that.

Ive read here that 'plastidip' can be used to help with this issue....do you spray / brush the plastidip onto the existing rubber grip ring ? or do you remove the existing grip ring clean and spray or brush the plastidip on?

Congrats on getting it working. And yes, you do have either a dirty or worn grip ring. You can try to clean it first with alcohol but that may only fix it temporarily (I use Intraclean to essentially revitalize the rubber and it works great but the chemical is no longer manufactured).

Otherwise, you can order a new ring on eBay....

You would have to remove the old ring and any residue left over. You can also try the plastidip but I have no experience with it but I do hear people swear by it.

You probably need a new loading belt. Side B jam ups are common w/ worn belts since they also shift the carriage during the turn around. Here is one that is available on eBay but I think you can find them cheaper elsewhere...

I would brush, I've never used the stuff.
There is someone on ebay selling new cut rings but I've never tried them.
Remove clean and then try your new option.
Good luck.

Definitely the grip ring is bad. It does not spin up fast enough to properly read the TOC (Table Of Contents) so it defaults to a single sided disc mode and will not let you switch to side B (It won’t work anyway because of the gross grip ring slippage you have). When this bad they pretty much need to be replaced of cleaned and then coated with something like Plastic-Dip as the original ring is too far gone to recover back to near original gripping condition.

Thankyou all members who have replied.. every post has helped me further along with the resurrection of this player.

Clearly my next step is to fix the slippage and then see how she goes from there.

Quickest way to do that is to go and grab a can of Plastidip tommorow !

On a side note...I bagged 50 LD's for 50$ today..mostly old titles but some worthy Criterion and Oscar winning... feels like it was a bargain deal.
now have some discs so need to get the player spinning nicely.

Well that's a better deal than the "lots" I see for sale around here (Finland, not this board).

If you're talking our money then yeah that's a good deal, there's nothing that cheap close to me.

Life has got me busy atm and so any further repair to the LD repair is on ice..however on my travels I snagged another box of LD's ..this time 50 for $70 AUD ...another rather older set but many top rated movies. Here is one old gem ..just the title alone does it for me!

As soon as Ive installed all these new blinds in the house in time for our summer I will be back at the player...got my can of Plastidip ready to go...and now plenty of discs waiting to enjoy.

(offer open to any US side folks with a spare CLD-99 spindle motor)

I found a donor box & that should be "in the mail" now! Yippee! ...now Anyone want to venture a guess how much a spindle motor swap will be?

Post subject:  Re: Questions about - Pioneer CLD D770 (same as 703)

Hello Everyone

Been a long time getting round to this Player again - but at last!

Bought a new Grip Ring and fitted - all ok there - Picture Quality very good happy with it...no more disc slippage!

Only issue remaining is now cannot yet play Side B - When you press the Side B button with a disc in the tray and the tray ejected ...you soon hear a clattering sound for a few seconds and then the player stops.

Made a couple of videos - it seems to be related to the Laser Carriage.

First Video shows the noise and the gears slipping on the Laser assembly/carriage

Second Video shows the 'play' in the Laser assembly/carriage at that position.

Anyone any ideas on whats going on here - something out of alignment with the track..something missing? or something else ? Thanks in advance

...note I can give the laser assembly a 'nudge' when it gets stuck and it will go on to the end of the track and rotate to side B as it should....I can then also Press Side A button and it will go back to Side A from Side B without issue or assistance and also play Side A again without issue.

One other thing to note ..Laser struggles to get a lock on Side B Disc...Plays Side A perfectly.

Might be able to re-grease the rail to get it to work. Also check to make sure the pin on the turn mechanism is lined up OK.

Thanks for replying...gave it some lubrication..Im sure that helped cheers.

Also want to share what I've found which has been part of the problem.....

I'd noticed there was so much play in the metal frame that contained the laser assembly...on further inspection the
'rear rubber support' underneath the Laser carriage metal assembly had moved and was barely supporting (not sure if carriage is the right name) see picture..

I think the unit had been stored vertically and with heat the glue had softened overtime and had slipped a bit... I have repositioned and reglued...the unit plays Side B everytime and the Laser now still clatters a little but always makes the turn.
