I'm watching the American Pioneer-distributed edition of the Dragon Ball Z movie, Dead Zone, and I'm noticing that the songs sung in Japanese have corresponding English subtitles.

Is there anything I can do, or are any subtitles I will see hardcoded, meaning I'm out of luck?

Please let it be the former.

Thanks.

I believe all subtitles on LD are hard subs.

Unless they're CC or LD+G.

I view these as different things. I am talking purely about subtitles not cc. So like a subtitle track on a DVD or BD.

LD-G is like subtitles on a DVD and can be turned on and off. The HLD-X9 does not have LD-G capability.

The HLD-X9 has no inbuilt CC (no LD player does?) or LD-G.

If you bought it expecting otherwise... There's this thing called 'research'... Seems mostly no-one does/gets it these days...

No LD player has built in CC decoding as far as I know. That stuff was usually a set top box until it became US law to have CC and V chip in every TV.

The subs on the BDZ LD are in the video so they are there all the time and can’t be shut off. It’s also why they look so much better than CCs.

It´s a interesting thing, they made it mandatory for Tvs and cable/satellite boradcasts, right? Was it ever mandatory to cc the prerecorded material ? I always wondered why the Criterion Collection comes without (this very helpful) feature, something I really miss with those discs.
From looking at the size of a mycap decoder, it shouldn´t have been a problem to integrate this feature into a player.Maybe if LD had stayed alive for a couple more years ?
