That's a serious power board there. Nice looking unit, even if the PQ isn't amazing I'd love to have one.

i've never owned one of these myself, but a fellow member on these boards does, and i've heard that the PQ is outstanding,
about as good as it gets for an LDP without DIGITAL NR assistance...

Who said the PQ isn't amazing?? I have owned 3 and seen one in action on a DLP Dark_Chip setup just recently and very crisp on that Stewart Screen and I still think the CLD-95 & DVL-700 are just shy of the LD-S1 in terms of Color and Cross_Color_Artifacts.

Just my experience

Very cool pictures, though I hope to never see my S1 in pieces like that. I'd have to agree with grasshopper on this one. It's just my opinion, but in going from the D703 to the S1, I have no complaints. It's not quite as sharp as the D703, but I'd say the S1 is pretty comparable to the D703 with the DNR off. Either way, I've been enjoying it very much in the my short time with it. Good performer and it's very quiet.

No  the picture quality is amazing, whatever you heard or read is wrong.

The reason being that LD is an analog format and the S1 is the highest end all analog player that you can get.
you may get a player that has a sharper image, but then again it is giving a different type of image.
not a bad image in any way, shape or form but different.

I actually hadn't heard either way, but normally the 1980's players tend to have worse picture.

they "do" but only because the best of them are showing you the truth, -and nothing more- of an inherently noisy Analog Video format.

it's sort of like Vinyl-centric Audiophiles, and their tolerance for that analog audio format's inherent noise floor.

the only real difference here, of course, is that said Audiophiles claim Vinyl to be a higher-res format than the clean-and-pristine Digital Compact Disc.

Conversely, i do not believe you will be finding much of anyone here on these boards, -even the most staunchly LD-centric among us-
that would attempt to claim for even a second that the Analog Laser Videodisc is of a higher visual resolution than a High-Def format such as Blu-Ray...

I bet the sound quality is incredible. On top of the nice circuit boards, there's a CCD TBC for the audio EFM+RF signal as well, which should take care of any 30hz warbles in analog sound.
