Post subject:  Video quality - LD-V2200 vs CLD-406 or CLD-504

Hi, first post here.

I've had my LD-V2200 for 15 years when I first started getting into LD's. It's been solid and reliable, but I'm thinking it's upgrade time.

I'm seeing decent prices on stuff like the CLD-406 and CLD-504, but would there actually be an appreciable difference in video quality with a mid-range player vs my industrial model? The really high end LD players are just too expensive for me to justify it.

Yes, you will notice a difference in video quality. More importantly though, they have digital audio where the LD-V2200 does not.

Keep in mind, a correctly adjusted display is very important as well.

That's good to know! I ordered the CLD-406 shortly after posting, thinking the price was good and even if it doesn't look much better, it'll be nice to have a second player.

I'm looking forward to the digital audio, I have a couple discs that I haven't been able to watch yet because I'm missing that.

So if you are getting that CLD-D406 shipped, there is unfortunately a higher than average chance that it will arrive broken. There is a fragile piece in there called a M-Holder. The CLD-D504 uses it as well.

LD players don't ship well, but players with M-Holders especially don't.

Yeah, it's getting shipped. Didn't know that. I checked the seller's feedback before buying, and I saw multiple comments on how well they pack for shipping, so hopefully all turns out well.

Update. They packed it quite well! It wasn't double-boxed, but there was a couple inches of padding on all sides.

It works! Really well, actually. Everything operates quietly, the tray eject isn't fussy, and the picture looks considerably better than the old LD-V2200 when capturing to PC. Definitely lacks a good bit of the video noise that I had on the old player. I'm happy. :)

Not sure if it'll look any better on a modern TV yet, but at least I finally have digital sound.

Glad to hear it survived.

The Video Essentials LD is well worth the investment. Just make sure it includes the blue filter if you purchase it.

I think I'll pick up the essentials disc, thanks for the tip.

I am noticing that the picture output from this player is actually somewhat darker than the LD-V2200. Is that normal?

Here's a screenshot of it with a disc stopped and some OSD text. On the 2200, the blue would be quite bright, and the white text is also much brighter.

Trying to figure out if something is wrong with the circuitry, or it's normal.

I take that back, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong. I think it just gives a more accurate picture when playing discs and I'm not used to it. Clearly superior contrast.

For comparison, here's the same frame from the Dr. Strangelove Criterion disc on both players.

The 406 is a 1997 player with the second tan M-Holder. (most models after it have the best, black one)

(The 504, otoh, usually has the first/horrible one and likely wouldn't have survived...)

Ah I see, thanks for the clarification. I knew there were three, but I haven't encountered the tan one yet.
