Came across one.
Would i expect a improvement in image quality?

I’ve never used a 590 but I would assume so. The 590 doesn’t seem to have VDNR and the comb filter will be inferior. The R7G was a common medium priced player when it came out but really it has almost every trick on it you’d ever want.

It most likely would not be a significant improvement (just an educated guess since I have seen neither) unless you use S-Video and the comb filter in the CLD-R7G is better than the one in your TV.

I don't think the CLD-D590 has CLV trick play, so you'd gain that. LD-G as well.

yeah, I believe the bells and whistles will only work through S-Video, so if your TV is missing that then you won't benefit much from it.

I do feel its the best player under a price point and now even cheaper and easier to find or cannibalise parts from other players.

As an ex R7G owner I'll add my findings if I may to the excellent advice provided in the above posts. Definitely go for it if your display supports S-Video, if composite is your only option you could very well be disappointed as this player produces a rather lacklustre soft image when connected this way, even when connected via such as a Lumagen Radiance 2144 processor. Using its S-Video output it gave my HLD-X9 a very close run for its money on well mastered discs, only losing out when it came to the lower quality stuff. It's no master when it comes to noise free video performance but that comb filter Pioneer fitted is probably about the best ever fitted to any LD player (certainly superior to HLD X0/X9) and this really elevates its performance towards the top end when carefully adjusted, don't think there's much in it between the one fitted in the Radiance 2144 tbh, what do others think? As I think was mentioned above just make sure the original remote is provided otherwise you may have a problem accessing the R7G set up menu with other remote control units.

Decided it would be a nice upgrade and having a 2nd second is never a bad idea.

CLV pause is always nice and i get to play with LD-G.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed and I'm guessing it will outperform the CLD-D590 which seems like a slightly more specked up NTSC only version of our European CLD-925? and like you say good to keep as a back up in these times. Be great to hear your opinion of the R7G when it arrives :thumbup:

The R7G arrived safe and sound!

Took me awhile to figure out the Comb filter settings, you have to turn on the jog shuttle btw.
The D-EXT does wonders for some discs.

I can't remember all the settings but when using the R7G compared to the 95 the R7G to my eyes on a CRT had a slightly better image on some
line art anime I was watching, the lines were sharper.

But this will depend on disc and while I did love the player you really need to adjust it properly and the S-video with it is one of the best where you can still salvage
parts from other players to keep them running.

Unlike the higher end players where parts are only for that specific model.

Sorry but I'm not in a position to provide a definite answer to that question I'm afraid, as I've never owned or even seen a DVL-H9 in action. I think it's fitted with the exact same comb filter as the 7G and I've read positive things about its LD performance but I'd take a guess that it's a close match with maybe the 7G just possibly having a slight edge? I'm sure someone here with experience of the H9 will chime in soon and offer more accurate advice than I can on this occasion.

I have not seen either, but the DVL-H9 is the only DVL that truly piques my interest. It is supposedly significantly heavier than other DVLs. I have a DVL-91 that I'm keeping, but that is only because it was essentially free.

I'll second laserfanhld-gb in guessing that the CLD-R7G vs DVL-H9 would probably be a close match in regards to S-Video output.
