This is my first and only Laserdisc player. It can do much more than play Laserdiscs, oh it can do lots more. To quote from the Wikipedia article:

Quote:
The Pioneer LaserActive was a short-lived Laserdisc-based game console released by Pioneer in 1993. In addition to LaserActive games, separately sold add-on modules (referred to as "PAC" by Pioneer) expanded the hardware to include compatibility with the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis and PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 game cartridges and HuCards and CDs. It ended up being a commercial failure.

I got this on eBay a year ago for $200. It came with the Sega PAC-S10, a couple of Laserdiscs, and a Mega LD game: "Pyramid Patrol." It sure is a beauty.

Does anyone on this forum have one of those, or at least heard of them before?

I have 2, the US and the Jap version.
Really just for fun. Not as a LD player.
It was really hard to find in good working condition as this device doesn't like overseas shipping.

I found nice to be able to play Genesis/SegaCD and NecHuCard/SuperCDRom games on one device.

So far I got 20 Laseractive Titles and I'm still trying to make me a full US+Jap MegaLD+LDRom set.

Had the whole shooting match and sold it back in the day. It was WAY ahead of its time.
Another member on here 'stalbrch' may still have the system as well, I sold him some of my software some years back.
This setup is one hell of a collectors item now thats for sure!

So jealous.

I want one, but there's no way I could convince the wife that spending $3000 to import one is a worthwhile investment.

I grew up on Sega and currently own 2 Mega Drives (one with Mega CD 2) and a Saturn. I had a decent 32X collection as well, but have since sold that off.

When I stumbled across the LaserActive, I almost cried. It was like the machine was made for me.

I had one with the Sega Pac briefly about four years ago. The picture was 48db video s/n ratio and it had an optical out. It played Sega CD back-ups real well but I never had a Laseractive LD-ROM to play on it.

If only you can get that NEC pack. Those games are much better anyway. I wonder if the NEC pack can play PC Engine games.

It has been a LONG time since I had the unit but IIRC both it and the original US console will play the .JP software. I had .JP software and I dont remember having to mod anything. Again I am not 100% sure.
I DO remember the Sega cartridges needing an interface (bought one in Singapore) that plugged into the console and then the cartridge plugged into it (cant remember on the Sega PAC...)

Surely someone on here knows for sure.

These units were a retail flop and I got mine at a retailer at a DEEP discount way back in the day. I was lucky to own the system as it was/is cool as hell. I sold it many moons ago as I stopped gaming.
Brian

PS-
The PC Engine games are better IMO.

the NEC pak is pretty useless if it can't play the Japanese PC Engine games. Any gamer serious enough to seek out an NEC pak would know that the decent games only came out in Japan. Now that I think about it though surely it will play them as the both the Turbo Grafx 16 CD and PC Engine CD (as well as the Duo variants) are all region free. I have a PC Engine Duo, and I highly recommend it, its a lot of fun.

SO COOL!

The minute I saw one of those online I've always wanted one. :) I'm a huge Sega fan and I think it would be friggin' awesome to play Genesis & Sega CD games on that setup. :) Maybe one day if I find one at a good price... :D

I remember reading an OLD issue of either EGM or GameFan magazine where they reported that there was some backlash in Japan to the Laseractive system not being able to play some PC Engine games. The problem titles were limited to the "Arcade Card" games (which were mostly ports of Neo Geo games) so supposedly any other "CD-ROM2" or "SuperCD-ROM" game will play in the Laseractive with the NEC pack.

Which is good, since that means you can still play the greatest Castlevania game ever made in Dracula X

Now as far as PC Engine/Turbo Grafx "HuCards" (the credit card sized cartridges for the system) go, if the same rule applies to the regular consoles for those NEC Laseractive packs, you can play Japanese HuCards on a US system with the aid of a convertor (like the Kisado Convertor.) However, to play American HuCards on a Japanese system, you'd need to "chip" the system as well as use a convertor!

Hopefully that's not the case with the Laseractive NEC pack!

I used to have a PC Engine and later a Turbo Duo, and I remember this, which might also apply to the LaserActive System:

Any CD-Rom games are region free.
All cartridge games are region locked.
On the Engine and the TurboDuo I used to have a mod, it was a switch to select if either a U.S. or JP cartridge was in the slot.
The pin setting of the cartridge slot was different for those.

So the suggestion would be... get the Japanese NEC pack?
Because indeed the mother load of games only came out in japan, and some u.s. releases were censored (Kato&Ken for example).

Still have mine with the Sega Genesis\CD pack. Still worked last time I checked, but I'm gonna have to look for the controllers again.

I've found some nice Laseractive documentation, Enjoy :

1st Doc:
LA Express vol.14 (February 1996)

It's a complete description of the last LA title : 3D Virtual Australia.
I find it very interesting as it shows the original prices of all possible LA accessories on the last page.
If I could find the 3D-Googles at that price, it would be great (/me dreamin')

Pdf (5.5 Mo)

2nd Doc:
General Laseractive Advertising Brochure (December 1994)

Infos on all the possibilities of the device, Games, Interactive Movies, Adult, Electronic Publishing,
Karaoke, CD, the curious PC-1 Pac... and of course LD.
It also states Widescreen, LD Rental, LD-G and LG-1 and THX

I really should get one of these. As a member of both LDDB and Racketboy this player really represents the collision that is my collecting habits, however; how can I justify one when I already own a few LD players, a few Sega CDs, a TurboGrafx16 and a PC Engine?

Probably the best reason just to get a Turbo Duo or PC Engine Duo, and an arcade card. Or alternatively, just a Neo Geo CD.

Get a cartridge Neo Geo (AES or MVS) but stay away from the crappy Neo Geo CD at all costs!
Once you compare the CD's with the cart versions you'll know why.

I have a Neo Geo CD. It's great . . . if you've got some time to kill between loading times. Like, slow smoking a brisket while the game loads.

I can't complain too much though. It bought it when it was $300 while the home cart system was $700, and I didn't have to pay $200-$300 per game.

Of course, you can get a consolized MVS system for that much these days.
