I think this posting is bs. https://www.jackvandijk.nl/hifi_equipment.php?Id=92

How many revisions or releases of the LX-900 were there? I thought the LX-900 was from 1992-1996 which is before dvds actually came out. Dvds first came out to the market in 1997 and I'm not even sure if that was in the US or Japan. In US we might have seen dvds more so in 1999 or 2000s.

No CD/LD player can ever be revised to play DVD since it would require vastly more circuitry and like the Pioneer DVL units would and probably need an additional laser pick-up assembly for the different laser pitch size of CD/LD and DVD.

The ad is obviously false and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Sellers make oddball mistakes like that every so often.

I’m pretty sure the only combo players (where “combo” included DVDs anyway) were Pioneer in the DVL series which didn’t last very long. The idea made sense on paper but things moved very fast.. you’re basically spending 4x money on the LD side that gets used almost never once LDs became the harder to find more expensive version. DVD forever brought an end to normal people paying $700 for media players.

Pioneer originally estimated that LD would last another decade after DVD was launched. If that had turned out to be true combo decks would have made more sense but in reality DVDs rise was beyond what anyone imaged and basically left LD in the dust forever in a year and a half or so, IIRC.
