I've seen a number of different places where people add optical / toslink /spdif to any number of devices much like this one:

Id like to have outs for both Toslink and digital Coax.

I swear i've seen someone use something like the device is photos posted here:
Does anyone have a link to one of these?

Im thinking of removing the optical In, running what would normally go to an optical socket like in the video, then running 5 volt in through the micro usb 5v in and cutting holes and mounting to the back.
Would this work / has anyone done this?
Any guidance/gotchas/things to look out for?

Adding a coaxial output requires more buffering from what I can tell vs just adding a Toslink out.

I used this board awhile back when I modded my CLD-M90 for both types of digital outputs and it worked great.....



Unfortunately, I can't seem to find these anymore and the only one's available are either a version that also adds an XLR out or a version that takes in an I2S input that I will confirm right now would not work (and it would be overly complicated to integrate).

In respect to your idea, not sure that would work. The output from the chip on the Pioneer processor is electrical in nature so you would need to use the coaxial form of transmission which still needs some kind of buffering. I would say it's not worth doing as you are over complicating it and in reality the difference between Toslink and Coax really isn't distinguishable.


Going back to to the modder for the Pioneer, his idea works great but I would add a 0.1uf cap between the +5vdc & GND as well as a 75 ohm resistor between the digital out of the IC and the digital in on the Toslink transmitter for more protection.

Both S/PIDF and Digital Coax working.

Nice job. I guess I was wrong about tapping the signal to the optical (should have have realized it does get converted to electrical again). Brain fart as I get older.

Did you end up using the power pin of the removed optical receiver to power up the board? I don't see that external power supply idea in play so I assumed you tapped internal power of the Pioneer which is what I would have done.

Yeah. Just use the typical tap point on the power board.

I plugged the board into usb and traced the path, and found that power from the usb went to the optical input the one I have black wire in. They are NOT the same order as the wires ac3 optical output.

Green is ground, black is power, and blue is signal.

Basically de soldered and removed the usb port (so it’d sit flush against the case) and removed the optical input and then wired the 3 to the optical input side.
