I had this AV Receiver on loan to my brother for a few years now but I felt it was time to reclaim it seeing how AC3-RF equipped hardware was getting more scarce by the day. This was by no means a high end unit (in fact many consumers say it's crap w/ the rear amp blowing a lot) but compare it to other modern AV Receivers in a similar class you'll find the build quality (as well as set-up flexibility) of this unit to be pretty good still. Anyway, here are images of the unit.

Anyway, I got it back and immediately noticed that it was dead. I asked my brother why that was the case but he couldn't tell me since he almost never used it (should never have given it to him in the first place :eh:). Regardless, I decided to turn this into a challenge to fix and I focused on the standby power supply to look for the usual blown fuses or any other shorted parts. Upon my initial inspection, I literally found the possible problem in the form of a leaky capacitor.

As you can see, the cap has leaked from the bottom and actually pushed itself up from the board. I couldn't find anything else that looked amiss so I went ahead to order a new cap hoping that was all I needed. Luckily, that was it and the Receiver is working again....

.....And the new cap installed....

I couldn't ask for a more simpler repair. I sure wished it could be this easy to fix my Marantz, NR1605 but I'll eventually figure that one out someday.

Well, time to store this baby away for now until I find a use for it someday.

What a crazy night for me

Two or three hours after I created this post, my wife goes into labor and gives birth to our first child; a boy.

So oddly enough, I put this baby of an AV Receiver away and just welcomed a real baby into our lives. He is so cute .

I guess the AC3 mods I had been planning will be on hiatus for awhile.

Congratulations!

If the nursery isn't ready yet, rather than using the sock drawer as a cot, how about using the drawer on an LD player?

It has been a rough 24+ hours learning everything that has to do with a newborn. However, it is an exciting change of pace for my wife and I. Thanks for the congrats.

The nursery was at least a week away from being ready as this kid was supposed to arrive in mid February so we are in disarray but we’ll adjust quickly. I guess I’m going to have to move a few pieces of AV gear to my mom’s sooner than later to make additional room (the CLD-97 does take up a bit of space  ).

Congrats all around!

I bought a STR-DA90ES locally when I saw it had AC-3 RF. I opened it up and cleaned it and then gave it as a gift to a relative. It has been running strong for two years with no issues.
