tl;dr - Bought a Pioneer RFD-1, am able to get a demodded AC-3 signal (yay!), seem to be unable to get digital passthrough for non-DD discs (boooooo!). Setup seems sane but maybe I'm missing something. Hi! Yesterday, I got my hands on a Pioneer RFD-1 to pair with my DVL-919. The good news is that it does pump out a valid, demodded digital signal when I play a DD disc. I confirmed that the output is a valid DD signal that sounds great. Where I'm running into problems is the active passthrough of the digital stereo track on other discs. It just doesn't put out any signal at all. I tried with optical and coaxial input. No luck. If I plug the 919's PCM out directly into the final destination, it's fine. Any ideas on what might be happening? Skimming the service manual, I don't see any jumpers or other things that the previous owner could've changed but maybe I'm missing something. (I am technically capable, so I'm happy to crack open the case if necessary.) Also, before somebody asks, yes, the RFD-1 is plugged in and turned on. Thanks! EDIT: Nevermind. Not sure what happened but a config that I thought didn't work earlier works now. I can get DD and passthrough digital.

Hi. Thanks for replying. There isn't an interference in that regard. In any event, the problems seems to have resolved itself. I could've swore that, when I plugged in the optical cable for passthrough, it didn't work despite the switch being on optical. I tried again, and voila, passthrough worked. My mind must be playing tricks on me. Either way, I'm set now. Thanks!

That's why I'm not a big fan of these multi-input Demodulators that are only designed w/ priority switching in mind. There are a few reasons one would prefer hearing the PCM track instead of the AC3 track (The Idolmaker is one title in particular with a really awful AC3 mix but the PCM mix is fabulous). Luckily all three of my AC3 processors have manual switching for ultimate flexibility.
