Post subject:  Marantz DP 870

I was looking at AC3/RF demodulators for a while and finally purchased a Marantz DP 870. It has inputs for AC3, digital coaxial and digital optical. It splits the output into 6 channels (5.1).

A slight downside is that does not automatically switch like some of the nicer demodulators. The bigger dowsside it does not seem to have a regular stereo RCA inputs. So I am currently taking up two inputs on my stereo receiver, depending on whether the disk has digital audio or just plain.

This was my first experiment into an AC3 processor and I'm not too sophisticated at understanding everything. I have not been too impressed so far, in that the nice disks with AC3 seem to still sound better through the regular stereo outputs. I'm not sure if my receiver is doing some compensating on it's own, but I get sound out of all 6 speakers regardless and the AC3 route sounds a little muddy.

I can't be sure if it's this particular demodulator, or the AC3 tracks on the few movies I've checked out.

Anyhow, it's not terrible and still sounds pretty good both ways. I bought it because it was a pretty good price and my LD player is also Marantz. I just wasn't too impressed and thought I would be able to notice a huge improvement.

I have also seen a Yamaha AC3 decoder that is a similar design to my Marantz. These look more like full size stereo components as opposed to the small box style demodulators that seem to be the most popular.

FWIW, here is a link to a picture of my model up on flickr (not my photo):

Good afternoon / evening from the UK trixonian,

I enjoyed reading your post friend.

I have quite a selection of RF-decoders, but have'nt got round to using them yet but this should happen in the coming months, as things are now moving into place.

At least you have been making progress ''which is more than me'' so well done to you so far.

I am sure that we will both get there in the end.

 :D

Thank you Benmbe. I hope you get around to playing with your toys soon! I have learned in collecting that sometimes it's more fun to look for new toys than to play with the one's you already have. LOL

This is what I would call a "decoder" rather than a "demodulator", since it unpacks the 5.1 channels of audio to analog form, rather than simply turning the RF signal into a SPDIF digital signal & passing it along to some othee Dolby Digital component. The manual is available from LDDb.

I have two Yamaha DDP-1 units, one of which I will probably be trying to sell soon, as I have acquired a Pioneer SP-D07 — but I still need to set that one up!
