Post subject:  What is a AC-3 decoder?

I have a seller willing to sell me a CLD-D925 Laserdisc player, 5 movies on LD and a AC-3 decoder for a really good price.

Anyway, I'm just wondering; what is a a AC-3 decoder? What does it do? How does one connect it?

I don't have any sound equipment or speakers or anything extra like that, I just use the TV itself for sound..

on the left analog track on AC-3 laser discs is the 5.1 AC-3 audio.
if you listen to it you will hear static, if you have the decoder and then have it hooked upto
a 5.1 amplifier then you will get all the AC-3 channels.

there is an OUT on the back of the LD player that will go into the IN on the back of the decoder, then there is
an OUT on the back of the decoder that will go into the IN on an amplifier.

if you are using just a TV then it won't do any good, but if you ever plan in the future to use AC-3 then you need
that decoder.
i had a nice one but only own about 12 AC-3 discs, so i figure why do i need this? and sold it.

it will all depend on what you do for the future.

It won't be of any use to you. They usually sell for around $100+ so either list it on the Bay or just keep it until you get a surround sound system hooked up.

The only purpose is to demodulate the Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3) signal so it can be fed into the receiver. If you're only using the TV speakers then you won't even use that output on the player.

See the link in my signature for a diagramme showing just how to use it. It is intended to allow you to play 5.1-channel Surround Sound from certain LaserDiscs encoded with a special audio signal. Of course, without surround speakers it's mostly decorative!

Thanks for the answers guys. I guess it'll be good to have just in case.

Yeah, since none had been made in at least 12 years, and none will probably ever be made again, its not a bad thing to have around.

Is the digital optical-out the same thing as AC3 (as in 5.1) and, if so, is a decoder also needed for optical-out too?

I picked up a CLD-D704 from a thrift store but don't have a receiver with optical to test it with. Can any receiver with optical-in work?

The RF demodulator is only needed for AC-3 laserdiscs to convert it to a regular Dolby Digital sound stream. Only LDs have a need for this piece, and only AC-3 LDs.

Disks with PCM 2.0 or DTS output that from the optical/SPDIF and will work with any receiver.
