It is auto switching but priority is ac-3. If it detects ac-3, you can not switch to pcm. If you watch pcm only discs it will automatically output pcm. You need a separate coax or optical cable connected from your player into 519. Rf output doesn't include pcm signal. |

Does the Meridian somehow change the PCM signal so it's no longer standard? Is there any tricks that I can do to make it work with Yamaha? Perhaps some digital-digital-conversion box? The Meridian 519 has a series of jumpers inside that control signal pass through. I seem to remember if one of these jumpers is placed then it will output silence if it isn't receiving AC3, essentially killing PCM pass through. It's explained pretty clearly in the manual. The 519 is a great piece of equipment. |

Thanks for the hints. I already checked the jumpers. Jumper 2 is open. From laserdisc player I had optical cable for PCM and coax for RF AC-3 connected to demodulator. To get PCM audio I tried disconnecting the RF cable. Amplifier just lost signal. I had optical cable between 519 and amplifier. If just disconnected both optical cables from 519 and put them against each other, I immediately got PCM signal to amplifier. So no problems with laserdisc output or amplifier input. Any other ideas? |

Have you tried using a coax cable for pcm laserdisc to demodulator? The optical in port could be broken. |

That's pretty much the only thing that didn't try, since I have no laserdisc player with coax digital PCM output. I'll check with dvd player and normal cd. |

Let me know how it goes. |

No luck. Even if I input PCM with coax to 519, the digital output is not recognized by Yamaha DSP-AX2. I only get valid output with AC-3 RF input. Actually I even tried to input AC-3 from another demodulator without luck, but I doubt that's even supposed to work. |

Not sure what else to suggest. It sounds like the digital inputs may be faulty : ( |

Well, my hypothesis is that 519 is outputting somehow nonstandard PCM, which isn't recognized by all amplifiers. It only works together with Meridian and few other amplifiers. This is already suggested in the first post of this thread. Does anyone know a converter box, which would re-encode the PCM signal? Perhaps some quality coax-toslink-converter. |

My Onkyo TX NR626 receiver picks up the signal no problem. I'm not sure about the audio side but on the video side it's pretty strict about what it will accept as a valid signal, so if it was a non standard audio signal I imagine it would get rejected. Do you have another receiver you could test it on? A Friend's maybe? I'm not aware of any converters that would correct a non standard PCM code. |
