Post subject:  Stupeed question? Does it work 2channel amp with AC-3?

I'm thinking of buying an AC-3 RF demodulator to connect to my laserdisc player.

At home I only have room for a 2 channel hifi:
Pre-amplifier/amplifier: Naim NAC112/NAP150.

I don't have an AV receiver or surround sound.
Is it possible to use my 2 channel amp with an RF demodulator or do I have to buy an AV receiver to use the AC-3 demodulator?

Thanks

You would need something that can down-mix the AC-3 to stereo. Why do you want to do this? Most (if not all) discs have seperate mono/stereo tracks for those who do not have AC-3 capabilities.

An AV receiver would down convert to 2ch if only have 2 speakers hooker up. Check with whoever has the sony, yamaha or similar AC-3 decoders instead of demodulators. You might be able to disable center, surrounds and subwoofer in the menu and have it output down converter 2ch in analog rca outputs. (5.1 ch rfa outputs, you would be using 2)

Also agree with samaron, you would gain nothing with this. Ac-3 is worth it if you have a legit 5.1 setup otherwise you get inferior sound quality.

i thought i get better audio with a ac-3 unit
i won't get an ac-3 unit as you say it won't add any improved audio

thanks for clarifying this

Think of ac-3 as mp3. It's (highly)compressed audio. Digital tracks are same as CD quality. The benefit of Ac-3 is each channel is separately recorded (thus high compression to fit 6 channels into space of 1ch). Digital tracks have 4 channels information folded onto 2ch using in/out of phase signals. Separating 4 ch from 2ch is less successful in the scheme but the audio is lossless and very good fidelity. Ac-3 doesn't need separation of channels as they are discreet but the quality is about 192kbps mp3.

Yeah, AC3 as awesome but is actually lower quality per channel than the standard digital stereo. It only makes sense when you have the extra speakers. Downmixing would also make the mix wacky, leaving speakers out would leave you mostly with just music and front sound FX and virtually no dialogue in most movies.

The only systems with higher quality stereo than LD (which is identical to stereo CD) are Super Audio CD, DVDA, HQ downloads, etc.

Good stereo is really good though, so don't feel bad.

I'll stick with my 2 channel stereo coz audio iz really awesome from NAIM.
audio from LD player is really good in 2 channel stereo, me likez it a lot!

maybe in future, I might get an AV surround receiver and an AC-3 unit, for now it's only 2 channel stereo for my taste.

thanks all of ya givin' me important info
