Hi Guys, My name is Wim, I am from the Netherlands, I was wondering whether I could pick someones brain to help me figure out what issue I am facing and whether there is a fix for it. I am relative new to LD my choice back in the day was CD-I brought to the market by Philips (our local brand) as VCC (Video 2000) and DCC the CD-I standard did not make it. Anyway I bought recently a Denon LA-2300, a Sony SDP-EP9ES and a converter to convert RCA into HDMI as my Samsung TV requires HDMI connections. I have tried to hook all this up to my Onkyo TX-SR252. All seemed pretty straight forward. Now the good news, I have video on the Samsung TV and I have analogue sound on the Onkyo TX-SR252. Now the bad news, I hooked up the AC-3 RF port from the Denon LA-2300 to the Sony SDP-EP9ES and do not get any sound back over the optical link to the Onkyo TX-SR252. (AC-3 RF out of the Denon LA-2300 --> AC3-RF in of the Sony SDP-EP9ES and the Optical out of the Sony SDP-EP9ES --> the Onkyo TX-SR252 Optical in) I ran the following (amateur) tests: - I ran the self diagnostics on the Sony SDP-EP9ES no errors detected (AC3+DIGITAL2 during power up), so I ruled out the a malfunctioning Sony SDP-EP9ES. - When selecting the optical input on the Onkyo TX-SR252 it seems to detect a digital signal, once I switch of the Sony the detected signal is gone. I concluded the optical link between the Sony SDP-EP9ES and the Onkyo TX-SR252 is fine or is anybody aware of incompatibilities between the 2 named boxes? - I put the AC3-RF output of the Denon LA-2300 to an analogue input on another amplifier as I was hoping to hear some noise from the AC3-RF port but no luck (nothing). My none tech conclussion is that I do not get a signal from the AC-3 RF port of the Denon LA-2300 (????) or am I barking under the wrong tree? I hope anyone is able to help me out. Best regards, Wim |

Hello! OK I just re-read Sony SDP-EP9ES Used as a ac3rf demodulator and it seems like AC3 OUT should get out of this little guy demodulated. Sony SDP-EP9ES Used as a ac3rf demodulator So what could be wrong... What AC3 LD are you testing? Julien |

Hi Julien, Thank you for the reply. I have tested a couple of AC-3 encoded LD this morning I have tried the NTSC version of Chain Reaction, no luck Regards, Wim |

I do use my SDP-EP9ES as a "demodulator only" as noted in the steps you indicated. If you are still not getting a lock, check the AC3-RF output with a voltmeter. You should get a reading of about 3.6 to 4.5 vdc during play and a 0 vdc when stopped / paused. Also, there is always a distinctive click on the EP9 whenever you switch the player to play and pause/stop. In addition, are you sure that the optical input on the Onkyo is not assigned to anything else but the "TV" input? This AV Receiver is capable of re-assigning it to another input. |
