Post subject:  Finally have an AC-3 player and disc, need demodulator

I got a D604 recently and I just bought a copy of Tenchi Muyo In Love Tenchi Muyo in Love: The Movie (1996) [PILA-1393] and now I need a demodulator.

Checking eBay they seem...kind of expensive, honestly. Now, part of this is because I know I'm not going to get a great deal of use out of it. When I look at a complete list of all AC-3 LDs...there aren't that many I want. Honestly, Tenchi Muyo in Love is actually not that great of a movie so I'm already kind of scraping the barrel. :) Checking what else is out there I can only honestly come up with maybe 25 titles I'll ever own as AC-3 LDs. The time period between, whatever it was, 1995-1999 was pretty inconvenient. There weren't that many good new movies that came out during those years. Also, since just about everything you'd ever want classic-wise had just been released in the early 90s and therefore didn't deserve to be released again so soon...then DVD came and killed off LD leaving a pretty pathetic selection. Too bad, really.

Anyway, so since I'm hardly ever going to actually use the thing, does anyone have any suggestions on which model to buy and where to get it?

Hello signofzeta,

Good to read about your experiences / background info.

Thank you sharing with the site.

RF-Demodulator Kenwood 991D is one amongst many but can be had for around $30 on ebay.

A good number of Demod's that come up for sale on ebay are from the US, so you should be able to pick one up soon.

I hope you enjoy the format as we all do here.

All the best to you.

Regards

i had only about 14 AC-3 discs when i bought my Pioneer SP-D07.

but you have to have 5 speakers, i had and it would drive me crazy having 1 intergrated amp, the AC-3 decoder and then having to switch back and forth between DTS, AC-3, Dolby, Stereo, Mono.

now i only have 12 discs and sold all of my gear and have a 100 watt 2 channel setup that i can sort of get upto half way without my ears bleeding :o .
now i really enjoy my music and movies with a classic audiophile setup :ugeek:
and i don't feel that i'm missing out on anything.

I hear you, believe me. When it comes to just enjoying a movie, a quality stereo setup beats a Walmart surround system any day.

For my purposes here though I'm fully understanding that 5.1 is a gimmick and I want to experience it in all of its chease. It is quite a bit more immersive that Pro Logic for sure, however.

I actually have a vintage stereo setup in the living room with turntable and iPod dock just for listening, no TV. :). In my "SD room" I have an Onkyo receiver that can switch between the three different types of LD audio (I don't plan on DTS, ever) with just the remote.
