@elvis
I am considering Intensity Shuttle with Thunderbolt(faster than usb 3.0) designed for Mac. The hard drive is 256GB solid state as far as I know it doesn't get any better.
@publius
I checked the specs of intensity shuttle it appears to accept 1080i60.

If I capture directly out of MSC-4000 Muse decoder, how can I go about adjusting colors and contrast correctly in software?

On Windows, avisynth would work nicely. I'm not sure what tools to use on Macs, though.

I couldn't find any issues for the BM Intensity Shuttle with Thunderbolt concerning motherboard on their forum. I just know that only certain chipsets with motherboards worked for the 3.0.
I really don't know if you will have any issues with writing to the hard drive containing the operating system in Mac? I know I wouldn't do it with a PC and I definitely wouldn't try with a Windows based labtop.

You'd be better off running it natively in OS X vs Windows BootCamp. I'm not sure on Black Magic but the HD PVR has direct contrast/color adjustments right at the capture setup. I found a way on my current HD DVD project to convert 30 to 24 via post processing in MPEG 4, I just haven't had time to compare the results.

I am sure there are picture adjustments but how do I know I get the right picture?
on my HT display I used a colormeter/spectro with calman software to get the greyscale right. I will also calibrate Crystalio II's muse input with the same gear so I know whats coming out of Crystalio II is 100% correct.

for direct capture (bypassing Crstalio II) I would have to calibrate MAC's monitor first then adjust with picture settings of the software to match MUSE inputs greyscale. I cant think of anything else?

There is a "video processing amplifier" function in the Blackmagic driver. I'm not sure whether there is also a waveform monitor function ; if there is, you can calibrate directly from the waveform display without paying any attention to the picture as it displays on your monitor. Just get the grayscale levels linear & the color-bar levels correct, & you should be fine.

The Blackmagic driver also has an inverse 3:2 pulldown option, which you could use while capturing, although in my opinion it's better to do that as a postprocessing step.

This is from reading the Blackmagic Desktop Video manual. I strongly suggest you have a look — you can find it here.

Ok just ordered Black Magic Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt and 2m thunderbolt cable.
I am going to follow your recommendations. MSC-4000 has 2 sets of component output in the back. 1st one has component+ HV sync(5 RCAs) which feeds into Crystalio II for viewing, 2nd one is component(3 RCAs) designed for w-vhs recordings(no onscreen display) which will feed into BM intensity shuttle. I am also going to feed BM intensity shuttle with Pioneer HLD-X0's s-video output for regular laserdisc captures.

I think this will take care of video. Do I need a separate audio card? Intensity Shuttle can capture 2ch analog but no digital inputs. I would like to capture EFM channels in digital if possible.

What is the audio output cable on the Muse?

Post subject:  Re: MUSE/HI-VISION to BD/HD-DVD/AVC-DVD Project

The MSC-3000/4000 has the following audio outputs.
RCA line level L/R/C/S/S or L'/R' (user selectable downmix option) × 2
SPDIF RCA digital 1/2 (L/R) and 3/4 (C/S)

The menu audio output options are "2c", "4ch", & "5ch", but for programs which actually exist on Hi-Vision LD, the results are not different except that in 4ch mode the "surround right" jack will be dead. Likewise the multi-audio menu options are irrelevant.

Post subject:  Re: MUSE/HI-VISION to BD/HD-DVD/AVC-DVD Project

The HD PVR has SPDIF so a direct connection would work. I capture digital audio via the digital RCA's from LD player (as well as AC3, DTS and SPDIF for Directv) connected to Denon AVD 2000, then a single SPDIF from there to HD PVR, switchable on the front of AVD 2000.

So the question now is can you output digital audio via the RCA's? Or just SPDIF? You could always encode it into Dolby Digital 2.0 or just leave it PCM.

The problem is the A-Mode recordings, in which you have two separate two-channel digital PCM signals being output from separate connectors.

SPDIF is just the interconnect which carries the digital audio. It doesn't have a separate format.

Does that mean receivers for MUSE 4-channel audio had two SPDIF inputs to be used concurrently?

I think you made a good choice with the Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt. Based on the tech specs comparison chart, it looks like the Intensity Extreme loses a few features (independent analog connections, 8ch HDMI audio, progressive SD), gains none, and only adds "solid piece of aluminum" machining to entice you to pay $60 more.

Can the Crystalio II not output at the native frame rate?

All the components I have ever seen which were built to work with MUSE had multichannel analog line-level connexions.

A diagramme from a manual suggests that the expected use of the dual SPDIF outputs was to connect each to a stereo DAC feeding two channels worth of amplification. Why anyone would do this, I have no idea.

What's on the back of the player directly? Does it have digital outputs there?

For audio Ld player has the usual digital coax and optical, analog rca, ac3 rf out.
for video ld player has composite, svideo and muse composite.

some muse discs have digital audio encoded like regular ld so you get sound from dig. Coax and optical also analog rca using players internal dacs.
If muse is not digital audio encoded you get no sound from the player

Decoder has 5 rca left center right 2×mono surround. You can disable center and 2 mono surrounds to get front left and right total(center and surtound downmixed)
There is 2 optical outputs. Sony does not downmix on digital outputs so you front left and right on 1, center and 1 mono surround on 2.

Jvc decoder downmixes digital inputs as well. Sony doesnt. But sony is better on video.

Not sure what you're trying to say here.
If you will refer to the User Guide I made, you will note that the Victor HV-MD2 has no digital audio outputs. The HV-VMD1, on the other hand, has only stereo/downmix analog outputs, so the only way to get non-downmixed audio is via its paired digital outputs. Neither one downmixes audio & then outputs it via SPDIF.

I dont own the jvc units nicolas santini once told me jvc could do downmixed digital. Maybe I remember wrong

Ok, that clears it up. So no audio at all unless it's digital and then it's through the decoder and then it's either 2ch or 5ch.

You could capture each of the audio channels separately and then reencode them into a 5 channel DD. But you'd have to do individual captures of each or two at a time would be easiest. Then you could add a LFE .1 from one of the front channels. That's the way I'd do it. Then you'd have a 5.1 DD track.

Or do the 5 channel captures plus the 2ch one for a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix plus a 5.1 mix.
