This is definitely my most ambitious project yet.

The PDP-501R is, as its designation might suggest, the receiver cabinet for the first-generation plasma display, PDP-501. It's actually a complete A/V control receiver with a nice stereo amplifier built in. Among other features, it contains a full-spec MUSE decoder with component output, even though the panel itself was limited to 1280×768, & the receiver scales all inputs to that resolution for output via the HD15 (VGA-style) RGB connexion. Trouble is, of course, it isn't meant to be used without the matching panel (which of course either has long since perished, or isn't worth importing from Japan, between the weight & the picture quality).

First of all, it has no remote control sensor. That in & of itself is not such a big deal, because it is provided with a Pioneer SR terminal on the back, so with a quick cable connexion it can be controlled by pointing the remote at another Pioneer component ; or, if you like (and I probably do), a simple infrared receiver circuit can be built to drive this input. And the front-panel controls suffice for input selection. More importantly, there's an 8-pin mini-DIN "control" terminal, which handles functions I don't know about, because I haven't (yet!) obtained a service manual. One of the functions of this which I am sure of is to detect the presence of the panel. If I'm lucky, this is a simple continuity sense, & I can short the appropriate pins. If that works, the next question is whether a signal will be output via the HD15 connector which will give an image on a standard VGA monitor.

Science awaits!

A fellow of mine actually had the PDP-501 all the way back in 2000, bought brand new at nearly 100,000 SEK plus VAT and shipping (total should equal to 14,500 USD today). It wasn't really his favorite display. :)

Back in 2000 CRT was still king of the hood.
The first (really outstanding) Pioneer Plasma I remember was the 5000ex.
That was the first FHD also I think.
There were "good" ones before that as well, but not "awesome" if I may say so.
And that was one hell of an expensive piece of kit, but nowhere close to 14.500 $.

So does this have a standard component output for the muse signal as well as the HD15 (VGA-style) RGB connector?

Yes, as I stated in my original post.
I'll post some photos soon.

Sorry, blonde moment.

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the picture quality of this decoder versus the others you have. If I remember right from reading some other posts you have the MSC-3000 (amongst others) and a Sony muse player?
