Hello!

I have an interesting pet project to tackle but need some guidance.

I have 2 MSC-4000 at hands.

#1 is cosmetically damaged, has a slightly weird front panel buttons behavior, but works as expected (video+audio) after cleaning the corrosion on the back connectors.
#2 is cosmetically near-mint, has a working front panel but outputs NOTHING on sound or video.

So the idea would be to a) troubleshoot #1 and eventually b) swap the good parts of #2 to #1 chassis

Both are the same B-version and revision, a few extra soldered patches on #1 than #2.

Quick summary: trying to make a good looking/working MSC-4000 out of a broken but clean and working but ugly ones :-)

So far I got a fully functional MSC-4000 out of the 2 "junk" ones.

MSC-4000 #1

Front panel/buttons: acting a bit crazy + scratches
MUSE audio+ video: OK
Back connectors: need corrosion clean up but OK
Chassis: mold spots + scratches

+

MSC-4000 #2

Front panel/buttons: OK
MUSE audio+ video: No output on audio or video (faulty motherboard or back module fuse blown?)
Back connectors: clean
Chassis: rather clean and few scratches

Swapped front panel/buttons and chassis from #2 to #1

Front panel/buttons: OK
MUSE audio+ video: OK
Back connectors: need corrosion clean up but OK
Chassis: rather clean and few scratches

Played Silence of the Lambs, The (1991) [HVMC-12819] with it => flawless (both MUSE video decoding + analog audio from the MUSE decoder).

Now... I need to figure out what's broken the the remaining MSC-4000.
That will give me a reason to buy a new multimeter and since I have a working MSC-4000 as a reference, I can probe back and forth to find differences.

Complete tear down, good luck.
Look for broken solder joints and possibly contact cleaner?

Any recommendation for a good audio/video analog plug corrosion cleaner?

Asked a High-end A/V shop nearby but they only had "Kripton" at rather crazy prices.
Sounded a like a regular product repackaged as semi-snake oil for high spenders looking for magical artifacts.

(black diamond dust (黒色ダイヤモンド) as an abrasive! sounds totally legit - also increases USB Audio bandwidth!)

That's basically it for corrosion (or any type of stuff really) on electronics, or is it something special you have to clean ?

The one I use is Dexoit, its very cheap in the USA but don't know about shipping to you in Japan.
All the high end repair shops use it on very expensive guitar amps and I'm sure home audio.

I'm not sure what you would spray it on in that unit, but I have a digital scale with one of those 1/8 inch micro switches that is exposed and I sprayed it
let it dry for a few minutes and it worked again.

So if you have any bad micro switches on front that will help them, may have to spray and press and spray some more as first time may not work
if they are bad with possible mold or corrosion.

:lol: yes Deoxit, my fast typing or dyslexia got in the way.

I know that if you have sliders you should use the slider version as there is a brush?, but spray is fine for everything else.

Got the one pictured above and used it to clean all connectors/button contacts with a cotton swab.
Polished afterwards with a soft fabric. Works fine!

Just need some alcohol to remove sticker marks and it will be go to go.
Seems be called シールはがし (SHIIRUhagashi) here.

For Removing stickermarks or all glue trace on anything, I use this :

It works well, but be careful, it's hard for the hands, and breath.
