Could anyone explain to me what the point of this device was? What were your sources for PCM supposed to be? A DAT machine? If you had DAT already why would you need to put PCM on VHS? If it was for CD would a CDP even output PCM through it's analogue outs to it? (the unit has no digital in or out)

I have this device and I don't get how to use it. I bought it coz I thought I could put PCM from a DVD or Blu Ray onto VHS along with the video but turns out it uses the video track to store the PCM. But again, WHY even bother??

Did you check Sony PCM-501ES?

It's converting analog audio into PCM that is encoded in video signal for VHS/Beta recording/storage.
They it plays the video signal and output the sound again.

It's using a magnetic video format to store digital audio.

Analog Audio IN => Digital video storage => Analog Audio OUT

Same systems were used to backup digital files on VHS back in the Amiga days: http://www.hugolyppens.com/VBS.html

Julien, no idea it was in the HWDB, cool. I just didn't do my research properly before buying.

So it was a way to archive analogue sound into a non-degrading format? But you could only do it onto VHS? Could I hook mine up to my cassette tape deck and digitise say the analogue output from my SACD player? Or you need the physical tape size of VHS to fit the info right?

It's a recording/storage/replay device.

You need the video storage, otherwise... I don't think you can use it at all.

It was useful and new in... 1982!
