Post subject:  Any ideas about an external DTS decoder?
I just picked up a Sony receiver with a 5.1 analog input and a Dolby Digital decoder through optical and coax input. I spent the last year hunting for a receiver locally and I managed to nab it for a good price. Problem is, it only decodes Dolby Digital and can't use a single DTS track from Blu Rays or DVDs. My question is, does anyone know a good external DTS signal decoder that can turn it into PCM through an optical output for use with my receiver?

If it has an analog 5.1 input, you can virtually buy any dts decoder.
I myself have a Denon AVP-A1 which will not do any dts, but
I have connected a Millennium 2.4.6 dts decoder through the
5.1 input. You can also connect the dts decoder through digital,
then it'll pass on any non dts signals as they are to your amp.

The Millennium units were available on ebay.com for a long time,
haven't checked if they still are.

The only issue I see with this is that I use the 5.1 analog port for my Marantz DP-870 AC-3 demodulator to the receiver. The marantz has a 5.1 analog input and output though, so if I could figure out whether I could utilize that, it might be an option

I have Millennium 2.4.6 dts decoder "and it won't do all dts" at least DVD from some players I tested this out a few years, at the hi-fi store from where I brought, the decoder wouldn't work Gladiator region 2 in fact nearly all dts DVD on Sony Pioneer, I forget what DVD player worked with it? Went though some 5 players until one matched I didn't buy the DVD player it was to costly at the time.

I use the Yamaha RX-V650 that seems to work with all dts Laserdisc CD DVD HD-DVD and Bluray. Well I haven't tried the Hitachi HD-DVD yet, but not going to bother.

The problem with that DTS decoder you gave the link for, is that it is untested and has no cords, so that one's definitely out of the question. I'll keep looking for an alternative though

I had one of these and it worked really well . . .

Technics SH-AC500D DSP

. . . used it with a "Dolby Digital Ready" Technics receiver (it had 6 channel audio inputs) and it was my first surround setup. Just plug in a toslink or coaxial source and it will decode it. Won't to Laserdisc AC-3 though (which is why I eventually replaced it.)

It sounded so good though that my brother and his friends were bringing CDs by so they could hear how they sounded through the setup!

O.K. so your receiver that you bought only has AC-3.
so that means it's an older one without DTS, right?

why don't you just pickup another receiver rather than a decoder for DTS?
i believe you can piggyback them, one in one out etc.

my Pioneer that i had, had preamp outs to go into power amps if you needed more power etc.
and it had ins for when i did have the AC-3 decoder i was able to plug that into the DTS receiver i had
that didn't have AC-3

i've seen DTS stuff really cheap at pawns, as it's still available at bstbuy so you can get them used even cheaper.

It took me a year to find an affordable receiver locally, and even this one is a Sony that like to slip into Protector Mode every now and then. Piggybacking another on is unfortunately out of the question. I might take a look at the Technics board mentioned above, but I'm also thinking I might look for a Blu Ray player that has 5.1 analog output to piggyback on my Marantz DP-870

The Millennium 2.4.6. DTS decoder was designed and built by MSB Technology and is the only decoder sold that used the same design as the DTS prototypes (which MSB also designed and built for DTS) and is the only add-on decoder that allows remote control of volume by changing the level of the analog white noise output from the undecoded analog out jacks on a LaserDisc player.

I have an extra one, the black unit, and it's been upgraded with the new PIC chip that allows it to decode DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD bitstreams (the first units produced couldn't because the DVD spec for DTS hadn't even finalized) - I'll sell it to you for a very low price + shipping. It works great, you just have to supply a DC power pack, which Radio Shack has for about 15 bucks.
