Post subject:  Where to locate the center channel speaker?

I am currently replacing my Sony Wega SDTV with a Sony Bravia HDTV. In the process, I will be able to locate the center channel speaker either above the HDTV or underneath It. I know that soundbars are usually located under the TV.

Where should I put the center channel speaker?

From what I've read you should have your speakers at head level from where you are watching your films, TV, projector etc.

So I guess it can go above or below depends on how you like the look and where you will be sitting.
Should be the same for the center I believe.

The same level as Left and Right.

Somehow, I don't think you understand what I am alluding to. The L and R front speakers are on the left and right sides of the TV. The Wega TV is 27" and the speakers are both 6" X 16" which makes them about the same height as the CRT. You are telling me to put the center speaker in the middle of the CRT which is not practical. Personally, I would put the center speaker under the TV. (The HDTV is about the same shape as the wega.) The center speaker will not be at head level; but, it will be as close as I can get it.

Oh, I would do below, but you could also do above.

On my TV when I just use the speakers they are junk so I only use the soundbar for broadcast TV.
Movies run through my amp to full sized speakers and bypass my TV altogether.

As far as my knowledge goes signofzeta is right, if it was inside your crt it would be ideal, otherwise it needs to be as close in line as possible, to eliminate vertical panning "V effect".

Obviously. When things pan they will now track up and down as well if the height of the speakers varies.

Most people don’t have practical access to perfect home theater space but in a no compromise situation you want all the front speakers the same height. Theaters have put speakers behind the screen since forever. At home you do whatever is closest to that.

I have an old issue of audio video interiors that has a really good write up on home theater speaker placement, it seems like a lot of internet articles don't seem get it so well..

I put my speaker below the screen at ear level. I notice some of the manufacturers are making thier center channel speakers much wider now, I like the trend, but don't have the space.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

My center speaker was made by Bose and is sold to use for the center channel. The Bose speaker is 3"H X 21"W. The space that the Wega TV is in is 29" X 29.5". The Bravia TV is 19" X 29". I tell you this so you know that the Bravia TV will have vertical space left over of about 6 inches. I am going to put a shelf above the bottom of the space that will have an opening of 3.5 " where the Bose speaker will fit. Above the Bravia, I plan on putting in a second shelf with about 2.5 inches space. In this space will be put my Sony UBP-X800 and my DirecTV receiver. On the very top shelf of the entertainment center will be placed my AVR centered over the Bravia. In this way, all the equipment that receives IR commands will be in the same vertical plane.
