Great score!

It's a nice era of AV amps.

Nice bit of kit there mate

How do you rate its sound quality and how does your R7G compare to your original CLD-D590, was it worth the investment?

I only picked it up yesterday afternoon and mave not much time will it yet,
All i have done is check it processes the RF ac3 with some weedy 5.1 pc speakers

Bit of a long story getting a R7G here in NZ,

The 590 is a very decent player, a huge step up from a karaoke player i had before.
The R7G does do a bigger job in my eyes, mostly the blacks colourwise.
Also quieter operation.

Seems you made a similar move to what I did a while ago then, as I already owned a CLD-D925 (EU PAL/NTSC version of D790) when I got my R7G and would agree with your findings. Anyway I'm not going to pester you any longer as I'm sure you must be itching to get your AV amp hooked up to some proper speakers to give it a good workout! :)

Man, this makes me recall how sexy my Panasonic RP-91 DVD player was in Champagne back in the early-2000s... and how much it broke my heart that nothing else in my system matched it! :(

I thought about adding a DVD player from pioneer from the same era/colour for the LD room but would very rarely use.
Some here dont like the colour but guess being a Kiwi i dont mind :)

at one point I added a DVD player from Pioneer that had wood sides solely because of the wood sides and hardly used it so I ended up getting rid of it. I like the look of all of Pioneer's stuff so you did a good job here.

That was my first DVD Player!

Passed on the 707 (DD only), waiting for the 717 with DD + DTS out.
Similar to the DVL-909 => DVL-919 upgrade.

My first player too Julien, and likewise I held on for a 2nd gen player before diving into the DVD format. It's been packed in its box for must be 15 years now so not seen the light of day for all that time. It partnered a CLD-2950 back then and was eventually replaced by a DV-989avi.

Found a 717 locally working.
Are these a reasonable player still DVD wise?

If the price is right then yes, definitely I’d say. Just confirm first though that it is fully functioning (i.e. both DVD & CD playback) as its makes a pretty decent CD player/transport too - especially using a high quality off board dac, and if you require better than s-video output one of the euro connectors gives you the option for RGB output which I used when I ran Seleco/Sim2 CRT projectors back in the day.
