Post subject:  Cheap AC3 to RCA Decoders on eBay

Seeing some devices on eBay listed as AC3 to RCA decoders.

Are these AC3 demodulators? It looks to have the right inputs, but clearly are a new device. Just wanting to know if these are cheaper options than vintage demodulators.

Please provide the link for the product. They are most likely not RF input.

Ah good point on the RF.

Wow, these would be cool if they do work.
The second one looks it but for 110 why not just get a tried and true decoder or AV with AC3 built in.

In China “AC-3” means DD 5.1. Also “SD” and “CRT” are often used interchangeably even though there are VGA CRTs and sub-VGA LCDs...

I’d be extremely surprised if these worked with RF. This is honestly more of a pro device, despite its puny price. Unless you’re throwing a full sized theater together on the cheap or building a tube state home cinema I don’t know why anyone these days would want to convert a digital signal to six line level ones. There is no affordable home gear that accepts analog surround from direct inputs anymore.

This is like the HK ADP-303 with the RF demod (the important part) missing.

They are AC3/DTS => 6 analog audio output (pre-amp).

You'd still need an AC3RF demodulator's output to be used as an input to this device.
Your A/V Amp most likely already does that.

What purpose would these serve? it seems unnecessary if you have an AVR.

For small, self-powered speakers/mini sound-systems?

An AVR can’t fill a big room. If you want 5.1 in a church, for example, you could run each line out to a powered PA. Theater equipment is probably still made this way since amps can be separate then. In the home they’ve been out of date since the early 2000s.
