Forget the 8K broadcast video for a minute.

22.2 channel surround?

Not good enough considering 8K was first tested in 1995 (under the moniker Super Hi-Vision). Japan has embarrassed itself. This should have been a 256K video broadcast with 627985.9000 hypersurround wall of sound (without murdering someone) audio.

Disgraceful behaviour from NHK. I expected better.

If they think that I am planning to run 22 speakers through my room they can go boil their head.

There's a speaker above your head but not up your bum.

Dolby Atmos and DTS X are 7.1.24 for consumer cinemas and 7.1.56 for commercial cinemas. Trinnov Attitude 32 can do 7.1.56 at home too. These have been around for several years and there is a ton of Blu-rays out there with Dolby Atmos and DTS X.

I just wish Sony made SDDS for home. At the time it was definitely better than Dolby Digital or DTS.

I recall hearing the same many years back, though sadly I haven’t ever personally heard it in action so non the wiser.

SDDS had two flavors, 5.1 and 7.1 versions. 7.1 had 3 center channels, 2 fronts and 2 rears. Only few films were mixed in SDDS and even fewer in SDDS 7.1. I have seen some Sony AVRs back in day with SDDS logo on them but I don’t recall any home media. 3 centers made sense in the movies with scope ratio but didn’t make any sense at home. This is probably why it never made it to home cinema.
