Well we kind of knew this was coming after Disney+ came about . . .

Disney Fires The Entire Team Managing Its DVD & Blu-ray Sales

Truth be told though, the fact that their new output in the last 10 years being such utter crap for the most part probably exacerbated things. I mean, who's lining up to buy any of that? I think the last new Disney property I bought on blu-ray/4K was Shang-Chi. I used to get all the Marvel movies on blu-ray, but pretty much every movie after that has been garbage. Even their bread & butter, new animated films have been more miss than hit.

Unfortunately though with every major movie studio having their own streaming service these days, this will more likely be a trend.

Hope the boutique disc makers like Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome license new titles from the big studios to make more discs. I mean, shoot, Gruv (who recently folded Shout/Scream Factory into them) already has preorders for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie open while the freakin' movie is in theaters right now!

The headline you wrote is presumptive. The article was too long and boring to read, I admit, but you are jumping to conclusions. They eliminated the marketing division, they haven’t said “we’re never putting out a movie again.” They may make that choice but I haven’t seen it confirmed yet.

My suspicion is that they really didn’t need as many people in that division now that the market has shrunk so much and what’s left of it doesn’t seem to need any normal retail stores. They are about to do a nauseatingly huge Star Wars revival soon and not selling Blu-rays of that would be leaving quite a few million dollars on the table for no reason.

Disney has eliminated its entire home entertainment division in a sweeping round of layoffs that has sent ripples through the entertainment industry and intensified concerns over the long-term viability of physical media formats such as DVDs and Blu-ray discs according to a report from The Wrap. The move, part of a larger effort to cut approximately 1,000 positions company-wide, reflects the studio’s accelerating shift toward digital-first strategies amid declining sales of tangible entertainment products and a broader push for operational efficiency.
The home entertainment team had long served as the backbone for managing the production, marketing, distribution, and retail partnerships tied to Disney’s vast catalog of films and television series on physical media. This group coordinated everything from packaging special edition releases to negotiating shelf space with major retailers and overseeing global sales campaigns for both new theatrical titles and legacy library content. Its complete dissolution marks a stark departure from an era when physical discs generated substantial supplemental revenue for studios, often through elaborate collector’s editions featuring bonus features, behind-the-scenes documentaries, and exclusive artwork that streaming services cannot replicate.

Without marketing or distribution, no discs will get sold. This is the death of physical media.l from Disney.

The majority of discs I buy these days have no marketing or distribution. I certainly didn’t run down to Target and buy Looney Tunes Collectors Vault Vol 2 and Dagger of Kamui because I saw ads for them. I preordered them from Amazon/publisher as soon as I heard on Reddit/LDDB that they were going on sale.

Quite a few companies are already swapped over to a print on demand service for their physical releases, this is likely the road Disney is going down.

Is it just the next logical step after Disney Strikes Deal for Sony to Take Over Its DVD, Blu-ray Disc Business ?

Maybe Disney doesn't have to handle the physical media anymore but they might not give up, just externalize.

SONY has a good reason to keep releasing discs: they still get royalties on each physical CD/DVD/BD disc sold!

That started quite some time ago for CDs.

Disney's TRON: Uprising was only available on per-request CDr via Amazon. Otherwise it was MP3 or FLAC.

CD-R manufactured on demand by Amazon.com. Each disc comes fully packaged, with artwork, in a standard jewel case.

And that was in 2013.

Yet, they keep pumping out those awful vinyl pictures discs that do look good but play like total crap on a turntable.

The bad sounding picture disc is one thing. The liquid filled record that never gets played, going straight into a frame, is better. I love how the liquid starts to separate and then leak…ruining the matting in the frame and perhaps the paint on the wall. A disaster…but oh that warm sound!

Ironically my best sounding (least terrible sounding) picture disc is probably the reprint of Mickey’s Christmas Carol. I’m not sure how they did it. It’s the same basic construction as any other picture disc from the 80s but doesn’t sound like someone dumped sand on the turntable. It also has some good songs that didn’t make it into the animated version. Being Tight is Not Alright (It’s All Wrong) was simply not capitalist enough to make it off the record I guess.

I've got a picture disc single of Tiny Tim's Marvelous Mervo from the movie Blood Harvest, it doesn't sound too bad I suppose, it's the only vinyl release of any part of that soundtrack though (or was at the time).
