So the world's longest song started playing on September 5th 2001 and is due to finish at some time in the year 2640. Total run time for the one song is 639 years.

I wonder what media format the song might be released on in 2640? I'd better get a pre-order in now, especially if it's going to be limited edition and individually numbered. Time to ring the people down at the cryogenics factory and reserve my spot.

I thought this was done already by Satie?

Is it longer than 639 years? Do I need to book a wake-up call at the local cryogenics plant?

Well I thought his was infinite, could be played over and over as long as you wanted, so you could do it for 640 years

John Cage being John Cage, I believe he'd be thrilled to hear all the noise of the visitors coming over the years to listen to a single sound (unless you're lucky to be there when it changes!).

I wonder if there is sheet music available for the 639 year long song? At least you would be able to see how the song is played in it's entirety. Otherwise, unless a fountain of youth is discovered any time soon, or a 240bpm Gabba remix is released, nobody will ever live long enough to hear/read the song from start to finish.

Must be gutting for the person who composed it that they will never hear their song played in full at least once.

And along an (only) 8-hour version:

Turns out there's also a GIF anim designed to play for 1,000 years!

If your ears can tolerate it, the chord change that took place on February 5th 2022 was recorded live:

For the sake of everyone's sanity, skip to around 12m45s to see the start of the chord change procedure. It's very exciting...

So only 439 days to go then until the next note is played!

It doesn't say what the next note actually is on the web site. I guess you could refer to the sheet music, though I can't find where it says how long that note has to be held for. You can't exactly break it down over 639 years either as the previous note was played for 2527 days! Here's another bit of trivia for you. The performance of the song began officially on September 5th, 2001. Yet it would be a year and 5 months until the first note was actually started and a sound was made!

When you put the 639 years in to perspective, when the song performace began if you go back 639 years from 5/9/2001, you end up in 1362! Not only that but you have to switch between the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian one!

If that wasn't bizarre enough to make you think what the world may be like 639 years on from 5/9/2001, here's some of the events that happened in 1362 that just shows you how far we've moved on. The mind truly boggles at this crazy song!

1362. Notable events:

Jan 16 A great storm tide in the North Sea destroys the German island of Strand and the city of Rungholt
Apr 6 Tard-Venus robber bands strike at Brignais, France
Apr 25 Muhammad VI ruler of Granada killed with a lance personally by Peter I of Castile, along with 36 followers and his head sent to Muhammad V (or 27 April)
Sep 28 Guillaum de Grimoard elected as Pope Urban V

1362 Notable deaths:

Apr 6 Jacques de Bourbon, count of Marche, killed in battle
Apr 10 Machteld, countess of Holland, dies
Apr 25 Muhammad VI, ruler of Granada (1360-62), killed with a lance by Peter I of Castile (b. 1333) or 27 April
Jul 22 Louis of Durazzo, Italian soldier (b. 1324)
Sep 7 Joan of The Tower, English princess and Queen consort of Scotland, dies at 41
Sep 12 Innocent VI [Etienne Aubert], Pope (1352-62), dies

1362 Famous rulers:

Edward III (England)
Peter The Cruel (Spain) - Murdered in 1369

For folks from the UK who may be old enough to remember Margaret Thatcher's wonderful introduction of the Poll Tax, well, she wasn't the first! That honour went to Richard II who introduced the very first Poll Tax on June 15, 1381 which was followed by the very first Poll Tax riots.

Stuff that hadn't even happened yet includes The Great Fire Of London (1666), Black Plague (1665), Richard III killed (1485), Diana Ross missing a penalty kick at USA '94 (1994), The Boston Toffee Apple Tsunami (1919) and England winning the World Cup (1966).

I wonder what will have happened by 2640?
