I forget the relationship between Onkyo and Pioneer (merger? buy out?) but anyway, it looks like Onkyo is doomed. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Classic-Japanese-audio-brand-Onkyo-files-for-bankruptcy Note: The site has a scabby one free url pay wall model. Edit: It appears Onkyo acquired Pioneer, though not certain Pioneer sub-brands? I didn't know Onkyo also owns Sharp too. |

Pioneer sold everything but the car audio and DJ businesses -- the only ones that still made money really! Now Pioneer HT inside ONKYO was not part of the core business acquisition from VOXX, which means our Pioneer LD entity just died a 2nd time. Julien |

I recall my Pioneer XDP-300R is also made by Onkyo. In fact, Onkyo released an XDP-300R of their own, just with the Onkyo badge. https://onkyodirect.jp/shop/g/gXDP300RB/ I read somewhere that Onkyo didn't get the Pioneer Elite brand in their acquisition deal, as well as the DJ and Car stuff? I guess this news also means the Pioneer UHD player is about to kiss the sky too? What does it mean for Sharp products too? The only Sharp product I own today is a minidisc player which I kept solely for one Autechre release as it was made specifically for the MiniDisc gapless playback feature. |

Pioneer DJ is not only still going but is actually good. I don’t use any of it, but it’s good. Car audio is like…trash, basically. So they are a DJ/Pro audio company more or less, and one that relies on Serato existing. It’s not a very impressive place to be for a company that was previously capable of doing so much… |

I have to disagree on the Pioneer DJ products. The build quality is awful compared to the 90s, early and mid 2000s equipment. But the prices have sky rocketed in the same time. |

I thought Sharp was acquired by Foxconn around 2017... Another nail in the coffin for quality Japanese electronics manufacturing, anyway... |

I am curious/concerned as to what will happen to the remaining LD parts. |

I actually had to go check since I only know GGV1016 is still available. They still have some loading motors, remotes (well, I only saw one for CLD-V880), and various rubber parts (belts, grips). We can survive these, but if a stack of GGV1016s gets lost that would be very unfortunate. |

Look what happened when Julien asked about the stock at the Pioneer repair centre in Japan. They said jog on but you can have some remote controls for a price. |

I definitely have not forgotten about that ridiculous situation. I'm wondering how many NOS pickups were binned. Not to mention internal service tooling. |
