Looks like the death knell for cinema as a big player decides to temporarily close (and probably won't reopen) all of it's UK and USA theatres. There is one Cineworld in Ireland too, which is closed and probably won't reopen. https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... bs-at-riskI imagine the future of cinema will be one big player and the rest will survive as boutique operations. Drive In's have done really well globally this year. I'd love to try a Drive In to see a triple feature. 70's/80's horror, B movies, Italian crime etc would be brilliant.

But how many times a year can I be drawn in to pay $$$ to watch a classic I already own? Once, probably. How many times will I see the new Transformers or Wolverine movie? Never. Not in many years anyway. Zeta, we all know they'll draw you in to pay 40 a seat to watch American Pie in 3D.

Every time Fathom shows it I get a Google Alert.
But seriously, Totoro, Transformers: The Movie, Grail, Lebowski, it’s fun to do that stuff. You know, movies of a type they never show anymore. Intelligent comedies, usually. Sometimes anime, intelligence optional.

Kind of depressing news, but Regal isn't my theater of choice when I want to go to a movie. I prefer AMC with their Dolby Cinema showings. However, AMC appears to be on the brink as well... https://variety.com/2020/film/box-offic ... 234575780/If both Regal and AMC go under, I don't know what I will be doing if I want to go see a movie. There aren't many other smaller independent movie theaters in my neck of the woods.

I feel like over consolidation of theaters lead to hyperinflation of the prices of everything the theaters have to offer. Use to be you could hit up a small theater that maybe had as few as two screens, and they had relatively low maintenance costs, could operate with as few as two employees, and the prices for tickets and snacks were reasonable enough.
Regal Cinemas are the prime example of overkill! Regal owns two of the four remaining theaters in the county I live in. Regal literally bought out all of the other theaters in this county, save two that refused to sell, and demolished them. The two Regal built new are a 20 screen megaplex, and a 16 screen theater, both with stadium seating. The maintenance and upkeep on those buildings has got to be unfathomable. The 20 screen theater suffers from a lack of parking spaces, as it's located in a shopping center complex that has around thirty additional businesses; including CostCo, Cabela's, and a McDonalds.
Their 16 screen theater has the abysmal reputation of being in a rather nice shopping center that was built new hardly ten years ago, but the developer was out of their minds as they built in one of the highest crime areas of the city. Four of the anchor stores originally in that shopping center complex have either closed down those locations permanently or relocated them to other areas. And at least half of the smaller shop suites that flank both the left and right of the entrance of this theater have been vacant since the shopping center was built as it's just not a good side of town to attempt to run a business in, unless you're a thrift store or a pawn shop.
