Forbidden to simply dump your dead LD players anymore! --- http://www.starcourier.com/news/business/x1872801937/Eagle-Enterprises-in-Galva-offers-electronics-recycling --- Galva, Ill. — Eagle Enterprises Recycling has opened a permanent electronics recycling drop-off at their recycling facility at 510 S.E. Industrial Ave., Galva. The drop-off is open from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday. No electronics are to be left at any other time. This service is free to all Illinois residents, regardless of city or county. This is a drop-off program only; no electronic items are accepted in any curbside or dumpster drop-offs. Items accepted for recycling include personal computers (PCs); laptops; monitors; keyboards; electronic mice; modems; hard drives; CD ROM/Zip/tape drives; cords and cables; CDs; DVDs; floppies; UPS (battery backups); printers; televisions; VCRs; DVD players; Laser Disc players; portable radio/CD players; speakers/stereo systems; CBs/two-way radios; digital clocks; microwaves; cameras; string lights (holiday lights on wires); palm organizers/hand held games; video game players; joysticks/game controls; typewriters/word processors; copy/fax/scanner machines; adding machines; postage machines; calculators; paper shredders; telephones/cell phones; answering machines; and pagers. Most of these items will be banned from landfills beginning Jan. 1, 2012. The Environmental Protection Agency says electronics contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, batteries, and color cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Televisions and CRT monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead (depending on size). Electronics have been cited as a leading source of mercury in municipal waste. Brominated flame retardants are commonly added to plastics used in electronics. If discarded, these toxins can be released into the environment through landfill leachate. Recycling electronics avoids air, water and land pollution. It reduces the need to extract valuable and limited resources from the earth. It also reduces the energy and other resources used in new product manufacturing. Many of the components recovered can be used in new items. In addition, I've read that some people have been able to get some decent WORKING LD players at these recycling locations. So if you do have these recycling events, it might be worth heading to for some picking! |
