MD was really popular in my town in sweden. We pretty much all had a portable md player. Dont remember wich one I had, but it was a sharp wich was the cheapest recordable player and later on a more expensive sony model.

I had tons of recordable discs and 3 pre recorded:
Iron Maiden - brave new world, the prime year of the md in sweden.
Iron maiden - Best of the beast
Motorhead - March Or die

Finally had to take out the Carrozzeria (Pioneer) MD/CD player out of my car as it stopped playing CDs last year, then started to give me grief when trying to play MDs in the last few months. Replaced it with a CD playing head unit with an AUX input so I can still listen to MDs with my one of my portables if I so wish to do so.

Also helps now that I can listen the the full spectrum of FM stations. Even with a "frequency extender" I could only get a range of FM stations from 94.1 to 107.1 on that Japanese receiver!

Still sucks that I don't have built-in MD playing, but . . . what you gonna do?

saw a sweet Pioneer Elite player awhile unfortunately i forgot the price but it looked beautiful the finish was polished very well.

I can't believe I've never asked this but oh well. Anyone know of a list of database of MDs? I remember finding one on Sony Europe but I never got to save it. I would like to know if there is anything I want to be on the lookout that is appealing since ebay or randomly having them seems impossible to find something appealing.

On Minidisc.org there was this link to a list of MD titles, but it is a Geocities site and is no longer active. But if you can use the "Wayback Machine" you can probably pull the page up (can't do it right now--wayback machine is blocked here at work.)

Wayback Machine --> http://web.archive.org

MD List Page --> http://www.geocities.com/minidisc2000ca/perm.htm

You probably won't find any titles that aren't Sony/Columbia releases as Sony was the only music company that supported the format.

if its archive it doesn't work for me. I only get a blank white page. Do you remember when Geocities closed? the dates only showed 2003, 2005,2009 so I don't think it got archived. I think they closed before 2005 but I could be wrong.

I'm currently looking at a few one is on the wish list, (but I have to stay on track at getting my rack sorted out) the player/recorders seem so cheap to buy now.

What of spare parts can vital spare parts be obtained today?

The recordable discs are also cheap.

What's this I read about 45hours? Can a single disc hold 45 hours of recoding?

Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc
Capacity 80 min (standard MiniDisc), up to 45 hours of audio (1 GB capacity) (with Hi-MD)

I like the pro ones with rack mounting lots of them out there to choice from Like this slim 1U model Sony MDS-E10

So I found a Laserdisc related use for my older, non-MDLP Yamaha MD deck.

Since it has a 20-bit D/A Convertor, I'm starting to use that when I'm capturing music videos or any other LD clips that require good sound to my computer. I imagine the DAC in the MD deck is definitely better than the majority of LD player DACs. Also has to be better than the DAC in the external sound card that I have were I to hook an LD player through SPDIF to the external card.

The Yamaha deck (MDX-793) also has both optical and coax inputs, so it's pretty useful!

I read that article the other day. Its interesting that they refer to MD as a "flop" in an article that also explains that its lasted 20 years.

Also, this part:

"However, MiniDiscs did turn out to be more popular in Japan where CDs were more expensive and teenagers proved receptive to MD singles."

Personally, I've never seen an MD single. Did I completely miss something really popular or are they confusing MDs with 8cm singles, which were by far the dominent single format in 1990s Japan? That would be pretty stupid.

Also, CD albums in Japan were about the same price as they were in the UK so...I don't get that part either.

I have one minidisc, because I have to have one of every format of media. It's Sandi Patti, but I can't recall which album.

That's what I'm thinking. They might have been somewhat popular as a recording media in the 90s as I did see a few people listening to MD players on the train, but I never saw an MD single. Seems like a waste of space to use them for singles.

Plus, I think the 8cm CDs were actually bigger than MDs!

I too think they confused the CD3 single with the MiniDisc. MD was a great success in Japan, but I never heard of singles being made available on the format, and I often obtained catalogs of prerecorded MD's from Japan.

As a side note, the 3-inch CD exists only because of the CDV single - And vise versa - Sony wanted to introduce the CD3 but needed Philips permission since they were co-owners of the patents and licensing rights, and Philips wanted to introduce the CDV single AND rename the entire LaserDisc format CDV, but they needed Sony's permission to introduce the CDV single since it used CD patents and broke the CD format's world wide compatability. Neither side thought the others was a good idea, but both finally relented and we got the 5-inch CDV and the 3-inch CD Single.

I have a couple dozen CD3s. I think they are really cool.

My MD collection consists entirely of home recordings and dubs though. That was clearly the emphasis during MD's better years, hence all the Discman's with optical outputs from the late 90s/early 2000s.

I just realized: a lot of people must have been dubbing their CD3s onto MDs, maybe that was the source if the confusion?

Picked up a refurbed portable MD recorder, an MZ-R700 off of Amazon for $40.

Was getting worried about my MZ-R500 as it is on its last legs (when it should have been dead long ago after my nephew stepped on it--breaking its plastic shell; luckily the R700 has a metal shell.)

Might also pick up the optional microphone since the R700 can do mic recordings (the R500 could not.) Might come in handy when I go to another convention panel with some talker I might really be interested in.
