Yeah, the 1GB Hi-MDs are going for a lot these days

Along with the MZ-RH1. Wish I could have gotten one of those before the price skyrocketed!

The only thing I wish my MZ-R90 had was is the digital amps from later players. HiMD makes your MD experience more like a MP3 player experience, but do you actually want that? Folders and quality options and USB cables...ish drives me nuts.

I used to just keep it simple, pure PCM rips, minimal meta data. I had some SACDs and concert LDs I did with line-in real time as well.

To me PCM was the whole point of Hi-MD, not to store more songs.

If I had to catalog a bunch of recordings those labels could be great. In general though I like to use a lot of customization. Color, drawings, maybe a sticker.

I had a nice Sony recordable MD portable. I forget which one now, it was one of the later models. I sold it on though and just kept a Sharp basic player that I still have today.

The only reason I kept it is for an Autechre album I bought especially on MD. It was created for the format and the best way to hear it is on MD because of the way it's structured and the gapless playback (which services like Tidal and Spotify still cannot do!).

The album itself is unique as you can hit shuffle and press play and it will play the whole album in shuffle but it will play it as a new album every time. So you have an incredible number of combinations of playing the album uniquely each time. The MD is still the only way to do it afaik.

Yeah, I can see that working very well with MD. Since it was designed to be fragmented every player has some degree of buffer and totally gapless track transitions.

The They Might Be Giants CD Apollo 18 was designed to take advantage of Shuffle on CD players but in a slightly different way. There were a couple of dozen super short songs “Fingertips” all physically at the end of the CD so when you Shuffled them you’d get one or two of their songs between all the main tracks on the album. It felt more shuffled than when you just shuffle 10 three minute songs.

Here is a bit more information on it. It is called Gescom, but is actually by Autechre.
