Also, why are you watching this on a CRT? I didn't even know that CRT's were made with 1080p resolution (I thought they topped out the sets with 1080i or 720p) which means you may only be getting half the resolution with your TV. Also, were CRT's made with HDMI input?

There are CRT computer monitors and projectors that can display 1080p (and plenty can go beyond that)

Alot of Sony's FD WEGA TVs had HDMI inputs(and many CRT projectors can have HDMI compatibility added)

Though you are right, I cant think of any CRT TV that could display 1080p

I LOVE blu-ray! Just got Baraka off of Amazon. Now that's a clear picture. The best looking thing I've seen though is the Blu-ray edition of Speed Racer. When the cars are racing through the ice caves towards the end of the film. Looks amazing. Definetely reference quality.

Soundwise, I really enjoyed the DTS MA track on Fight Club. A joy to the ears.

Ive picked up a few more discs on blu recently. Raging Bull, the Aviator, Paprika and A Hard Days Night to name a few. All awesome.
I can't wait for next year though when Laurance of Arabia is scheduled to be released. That will be sweet!

I try to pick up the classics. Ben Hur looked and sounded stunning. Black & white films look amazing on blu as well.

Sounds like you got some "descent films" there. May I suggest a few to really get a good result from what blu-ray has to offer? Pick up a copy of Baraka, Tron: Legacy, The Dark Knight, Avatar, Planet Earth, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (crappy movie but 5 star video and sound quality), and Sunshine. I guarantee you will not go back to DVD! :)

The problem is that a lot of the films you chose (batman returns, star trek) are old and they didn't take the time to do quality re-masters. This is not blu-ray's fault but rather the studios being too cheap. Going with the suggestions I have above really give you the best of what the format has to offer.

Also, why are you watching this on a CRT? I didn't even know that CRT's were made with 1080p resolution (I thought they topped out the sets with 1080i or 720p) which means you may only be getting half the resolution with your TV. Also, were CRT's made with HDMI input? I would recommend using a 1080p calibrated TV/projector with a viewing angle of 35 degrees (very important or your not going to even see the maximum resolution which makes comparison meaningless). Also, some of the movies I have listed above have 7.1 soundtracks (Tron: legacy is one) so 5.1 will not be the "full show."

If you have the opportunity try these out, let us know what you think. Or if you willing to "hop across the pond" I can do a demo for you! Maybe we can spin some LD's while were at it! :)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) I wouldn’t touch that one with 10 foot barge pole. I touched it yesterday and it felt sexually pleasing to know I would not buy it. I brought the first one last month and I’ll be buying the even more crappy 3rd version at the end of month WOW at least my bluray player will be seeing DOLBY TrueHD7.1 as the film was mixed in DOLBY 7.1 for cinema release! Poor ole jolly Pirates 3 (2011) didn’t get DOLBY TrueHD7.1 as that too was also mixed in DOLBY 7.1 for the cinema but ended up getting dts7.1. Its like one person who doesn’t like skimmed milk and yet its the same full amount of milk in the carton! Same amount of bits on the bluray expect one is DOLBY and the is dts its like milk. LOL

Avatar hardly ever gets played and if played its the last battle in the film with trilling James Horner score and choir voices as the flying winged dragon or what ever the hell it is? Sounds good with some matrix overhead it really sounds like its flying over Colonel Miles Quaritch dragon, plus its more 3D like without 3D glasses.

Dark Knight nope I got so feed up at seeing the aspect ratio switching on Tron Legacy ever 20min or so. What are filmmakers doing trying to do today do what Douglas Trumbull Brainstorm (1983).
Quality Batman Returns looks colour correct over Batman Begins (2005) which has a few colour issues lousy telecine version and they used the same version on ITV I think last year.
I told you I only use the video projector for guests not for myself, I use the CRT for regular viewing, if I had flat screen I’d be using the flat screen for regular viewing and LCD projector for guests.

Oh that Superman The Movie on bluray same version as the first edition DVD except it doesn’t theatrical version and even if it did the DOLBY mix is not the original. Plus all the rest of the extras on this so called its better than DVD it doesn’t have the extra music/score which is on the DVD extras disc or flipper side, it only as the DOLBY 5.0 isolated score running alongside the film which is still a damn cool super score hands down.

I was deciding to buy Superman yesterday for £7.00 pounds I wanted to buy Underworld but even that version is the same SE DVD it doesn’t have the theatrical release so no way would I buy that. I thought Superman had the theatrical cut I guess that version is on the BOX SET and I’m not interested in it, maybe when the whole box goes for £10.00 or less I might think it.

I seen the screen captures on the DVD Beaver site http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/ben-hur.htm
Framing is important I think the version I brought years ago is flipper with side 2 of the film on the dolphin/flipper friendly side. I mean you’d want a break it is long film!
I think the version I have is slightly cropped look at the Beavers captures so I might think about this one when the price comes down a lot lower.

The other thing that is bugging me is the colour of the sky on the bluray the computer tinting mucking around with master video tape. The colour doesn’t look right yet in one of the DVD captures the colour looks about spot on. Plus the other versions are bit wider same as the bluray also this was Cinerama presentation before my time.

So I guess smiley black curved borders is now no, no on Cinemania bluray I mean if you’re going to do it like they did really need three projectors and damn large curved screen in the front of the room!

I think they should bring back Cinerama and call it Digital Cinerama with the few surviving Cinerama screens that are left in the world. My home town still as Cinerama curve expect the screen was replaced years ago and was recently refitted with larger screen with a bit more width than the previous screen for the past some 30 years.

If 3D can make a return then why not Cinerama on huge 80 feet screens!

I've gotta say I am really digging Blu-ray. I waited for a while and picked up cheap HD-DVDs before taking the plunge into Blu-ray when I got my PS3. I have double dipped at most 10 times, so that's not too bad. I like the colour and sharpness, but I do still love watching a Laserdisc sometimes for certain movies. It looks more like when I go see a movie at a revival theatre, more film like. To this day I still only watch Jurassic Park on Laserdisc, and don't plan on getting the Blu-ray until it's way down in price and even then, I will probably still mainly watch it on LD.

Some of the blu let me rephrase that blurredrays the camera needs to be mounted on tripod.

This is nothing compared to the amount of films since late 19th century there has to be at least 10 million films today and still counting at silly rate with remakes, reboots George F-ing Lucas 3D.

Laserbite34,

It looks like your cat is a fan of Blu-ray. He or she seems especially protective of Firefox and The Bourne Supremacy.

Umm, not quiet the newest release now its been out in the USA since October I think and transformed into region B UK shores last month and its now starting to wear off as film and sound format Dolby surround TrueHD 7.1. I mean the film mix is great sounding but the film SUCKS! Its the same load of rehashed on the street bollocks like the first one.

It’s great that someone pushed for it to be released in Dolby TrueHD as Dolby TrueHD as had quite a bit of an absence for a number of years now! I’m fed up with dtsHD-MA and I would sooner see DOLBY 7.1 releases produced for cinema released under the trademark DOLBY, thou something tells me, that won’t last long.

Next film on the Dolby TrueHD list is “SUPER 8” (2011) I have heard a few samples of the Ben Burtt sound effects on youtube and I can hear a few past library sound effects that have been thrown into the mix manipulated/tweaked, cleverly as for the 4-zone surrounds I might use the sidewall overhead surrounds to remove the centre phantom and place it above for that “train crash scene”.
As for Transformers Dark of the moon, I hated the colour on it and watched it a few times in 1080i and the colour looks sickening. STAR TREK (2009) still shines better, plus who is feed up with Michael Bay’s lousy film editor I mean the continuity when the Space Shuttle launched was terrible. “Go with throttle up” is heard far too early in the film and the cameras watching on the pad are miles out of sync. SIGH

I didn’t buy Transformers 2 rise of the under-lord of the fallen, or whatever the hell it was called? It’s in dtsHD-MA and I wouldn’t shoplift it to own it.
No more Transformers film for me again.

Also the annoying autobot Prime or Spartacus who whatever the hell his name is, the speech at the end makes me want to rip the loudspeakers out! Same old load of bollocks “We are here. We are watching”

And the quote in the film “the needs of the many” is taking the p**s and I’ll never be able to watch a STAR TREK II the same way ever again now.

I think the open was cheeky using Apollo 11 and cameo appearance by Buzz himself. I bet this has made Bart Sibrel moon conspiracy theorist day when he watched and finally Buzz admits the truth.
Still I can watch this video of the Buzz punch over and over for 2 hours and still it gets funny every time I watch it.

Bart Sibrel Being Hooked by Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11)

Here’s a frequency waterfall when Buzz punched Bart notice the extreme Buzz deep end.
