| Post subject: | How to improve yahoo.com advanced mail program. |
A few months ago, I upgraded from the basic to the "advanced" yahoo mail program. Well, chalk up another mistake in my life. This "advanced" program is not what it is cracked up to be. I decided that I would document here how to change yahoo e-mail so that a number of Annoyances can be reduced or eliminated. I checked the yahoo forum for complaints and there are a large number of them about these annoyances. Annoyance #1: The program puts an ad in your in-box that shows up at the top of your other messages. There is no way to block the ad using filters and the ad changes each time you go back to the inbox. It also stays at the top of your inbox and will not move. Annoyance #2: Sometimes, clicking on the subject of an e-mail causes the program to do a search of your other e-mail messages for that subject. I say sometimes because the program will also open up the message correctly, sometimes. Annoyance #3: After you have read a message, you have to closeout the message using an X located next to a tab on the toolbar for the message you were reading. If you do not do this and go to the inbox to read another message, the program will create another tab on the toolbar for your second message, ad nauseum. Annoyance #4: Ads in the right and left sidebars. Annoyance #5: This is related to Annoyance #1. When you open the ad placed at the top of your inbox, you will notice that there is sentence at the bottom of the e-mail to "unsubscribe" from future e-mails. Well, if you put your mouse pointer on the unsubscribe word, you will find that there is no URL shown at the bottom of your browser and clicking on the "unsubscribe" does nothing. Basically, it is a fake entry. (I wonder at the legality of this). What is interesting is that you cannot mark the ad as spam. Also, there are a few reputable companies (i.e. AT&T) using this form of advertising. This unsubscribe also applies to the spam mail in you spam mail folder. Annoyance #6: There is a noticeable increase in spam messages now. In the past, I averaged 2 to 4 per day. Now it is up to 12 to 15 and seems to be increasing. The following applies to Firefox Mozilla running under Linux Fedora 14.. These steps may or may not work on other browsers. 1) Install the add-on DNTMe located at https://abine.com. DNTMe is short for Do Not Track Me and is free. It stops websites from tracking your web activity. The acquired information is then sold to companies so that they can target advertisements for products to you (among other uses). 2) Install Greasemonkey add-on located at http://greasemonkey.com. This add-on allows you to tailor what you want to see on websites by allowing you to run user defined scripts located at http://userscripts.org. 3) Install the script at http://userscripts.org for removing ads from the yahoo inbox. You will have to do a search for "yahoo mail" on the site to find the script. Once you have done the above 3 steps, your inbox will look cleaner and will be much easier to use. Right now, installing of the 3 above have removed Annoyances #1, #2 (opening of e-mails works now), #4 and #5 for me. Annoyance #3 and #6 are still present. I hope this helps other yahoo.com e-mail users. |
