Regarding the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo, the first revision of the SFC can easily be identified as it has four rubber feet on the bottom, wheras every later revision only has two.
Here's a good comparison by the way but with a modded Snes Jr: https://youtu.be/IPbDvqFdjG4?t=8m4s

The Neo Geo has rather awful composite but I remember RGB being nice on most units. Another console that comes to mind is the Mega Drive, as the first model (both revisions) have issues with jailbars when using the RGB output wheras the Mega Drive 2 doesn't. However, the audio on the very first revision (with the text "High Definition Graphics - Stereo Sound" on the black ring, although not "Stereo Sound" on Genesis units) is much better than the Mega Drive 2. With a simple modification you can get solid RGB out of it as well, and when I'm using my XRGB-Mini the jailbars are filtered out anyway.

I personally think the Saturn has my favorite 15KHz RGB output. Picture is rock solid all the way with nothing to complain about whatsoever.

EDIT: Found some first revision SFCs for sale at low prices (though they're a bit yellow).

So now I've gotten both my Super Famicom and my SD2Snes. Have only tried it on my BVM-1454D but results are fantastic so far. Certainly much better than the PAL Snes in terms of picture quality. Colors are very strong but not oversaturated and picture is overall somewhat darker but has rich contrast to say the least. ALTTP has never looked this good to me. Will try it on my F1 and hopefully post some screenshots.

It was stereo sound through the headphone jack port at the front on the first Mega Drive consoles, mono only at the back outport.

Yes. Even more interesting is that the headphone jack actually uses an amp from a car stereo. You should be able to bypass it by a simple mod.

I had a wild interest for a CLD-A100 a few days ago but it was short lived. I found out it had 3D titles (like 4 of them) but then I soon realized it works on interlaced video only. I am surely not carrying a 250+lbs CRT rear projection set to my home:)

so did i... until i had discovered that it's SEGA MEGA DRIVE/GENESIS module requires all manner of high-precision service and mod work
that the MOD.1 version of the console does not. that, and i have a latent resentment towards 1992/1997 PIONEER products,
the very worst period in the firms' history of engineering and cosmetic design.

i personally despise the 90's Euro-look for CE gear, and PIONEER was pretty much right on RCA's heels
in extolling the design motif to the masses throughout most of that decade.

Also, the quality and reliability of 90's era PIONEER products often sucked... HARD.
especially their mid-90's AVR designs. their compact dimensions imparted them a most disconcerting tendency to overheat...
with predictable consequences.

in sum, a handful of generally fantastic TOTL ELITE series products were just about the only things PIONEER produced in the 90's
that even hinted at the glory of the once mighty CE firm's previous production eras...

Does anyone have a PS4 yet? I haven't yet jumped into the current gen of consoles, but I'm seriously considering the Sony console since it will get Street Fighter V exclusively.

Just want to see what anyone's opinion of the system might be.

I own a PS4, but don't really use it. Got it on the release day too. I play a lot on consoles, but usually only the old ones. Never really liked 3D games on consoles, so moved over to PC in the late 90s for those type of games. The PS4 is really nice, though! I got it because it didn't have any restrictions on second hand games. xBox One were supposed to have a system where you had to register your games to an account, thus not allowing you to sell it or buy second hand. This feature got removed, so doesn't really matter now. Depends on your preference or which games you want to play.

I think video game consoles are way over priced. Wait until the price comes down. Why pay £400 now when you will pay £200 in a few months?

Months? No. Not even.

I do see your point though. I've been through the console cycles enough times that I never buy them new anymore except maybe Nintendo stuff. When a machine comes out the price is the highest it will ever be and the software selection is the poorest...the worse time to buy.

I am more selective now and only buy what I really want to play and keep. I have no interest in WiiU or PS4 or any xbox. I was thinking to Shenmue III on pc but I had problems with Shenmue Ii which never arrived luckily got a refund.these gimmicks are annoying so I rather play old games with a real controller and much better at that.

Well the N64 and SNES were the easiest mods ever--just break off those tabs in the cart slot.

Even so, I didn't want to operate on my SNES. I bought a "converter" when I was in Hong Kong for US$10

Bought one for my sister's Genesis as well. That one was a little more pricey at $20.

Of course, the hardest converter to acquire ever was the Kisado Converter for the Turbo Grafx-16/Turbo Duo. I waited quietly on the "Turbo List" for many years before that guy who made them made the announcement that he finally made his last batch of them, and I called Turbo Zone Direct to get one as soon as I read the email!

For the Saturn, I have one of those 4-in-1 carts so I can play the Capcom fighting games that require the RAM cart.

I don't have any of that substandard HK garbage. A Saturn switch costs $0.25, works every time forever, and leaves your cart slot free. Some guys have even used the Reset switch instead meaning it's %100 cosmetically identical to OEM. Converters are just...one more dumb thing to go wrong, often the first thing. I mean, it's hard enough to get a system to recognize a cart sometimes. The last thing I need is to wonder if it's the converter. And who needs a giant diving board sticking out of the front of my PC Engine?

There are some uses for that stuff though. For example, in order to use Game Shark codes with any Saturn games that require the 1/4MB RAM cart you need the PAR 4-in-1. This lets you do fun stuff like enable air specials in Vampire Savior.

Well if you don't feel comfortable with them, that's up to you. I've never had any issue with any of these converters, and the Kisado Converter wasn't made in HK. Forget where the guy was from, but the guy who made them was in North America (might have been Canadian.)

Plus, a converter alone wouldn't work for the PC Engine. From what I remember to play US games on a PCE you needed a switch AND a converter.

Not that you really need it. I don't think there were any US exclusive Turbo Chip games. Unless you really want to play a localized game in English on a PCE.

You don't need a switch and a converter. Traditionally the JP system did require an (extremely simple) internal mod to work *with* a converter, but if you're in there you might as well do the whole job.

Now, however, there is actually a converter that works with every system. It does this, I think, by patching the US game on the fly to remove the lockout. Pretty impressive! But more impressive than what is needed, IMO, since an internal mod, first developed decades ago, can do everything and be invisible.

The Kisados were American, I think, made from sewing machine parts that happened to have pin spacing identical to HuCARDs. When the supply of those parts dried up, the Kisado was out of production.

I'm trying to collect every color of N64s, all Gameboys, and DSs.

I was really big into collection video game consoles on the cheap in the past 5 years, but I collected everything I wanted/ could afford. (I could always use a laseractive, Turbografx-16, etc.) Now I'm into the finer side of audio/visual. ;)

I remember seeing Atari Video Computer Systems(2600) stacked on the shelf behind the counter when I was just 5 in 1979/80 in Woolworths. I pestered my parents for one for Christmas but they were £199.99 and my parents couldn't afford it so I was disappointed. So instead my dad's working mate had an Atari and I would borrow it for months at a time but he only had 3 games for it, Combat, Night Driver and Space Invaders. Combat was the most played. Eventually got the long rainbow junior model about 1987 and collected games from a flea market for about 2 or 3 pounds each.

Visited Retro Gathering in Västerås today. It's a Swedish retro gaming event that is held every year. I usually don't buy a lot of stuff there, but this time I made some exceptions...

Image

Grim Fandango is the Scandinavian big box, still sealed with original price tag and rating. The magazines in the upper right are Super Play, which was issued between 1996 and 2009. I was a big fan of theirs back in 2003 and onward.
