i'm thinking of getting a used projector for my laserdisc player.
what kind of a projector do you recommend?
DLP or LCD?

I was thinking of getting a used high end projector from year 2000 to 2005 when the last laserdisc players were manufactured, i assume these projectors would still be suitable for laserdisc players?
i guess newer projectors are not made for laserdisc players only for high resolution dvd and bluray players?

projector has to be petite and have a quiet fan, coloring, contrast and brightness needs to have TOP performance!

what brand of projectors do you recommend for laserdisc players?

BTW, are there still replacement lamps for these old projectors available?

I can only speak for myself but the NEC HT-1100 (DLP) has been doing a great job with LDs.
It's a 4/3 VP with a built-in scanner that words very well with my HLD-X9.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/NEC-HT1100.htm

Of course it's quite outdated in terms of luminosity, noise and heat dissipation.

But as long as it doesn't die on me, I'll stick to it. It can be found really cheap these days ($100+ when MSRP was $5K).
Lamps still available.

Sony G90
Marquee 9500
Barco cine9

Are absolute best projectors for ld. They are 9"(each of 3 guns) crt and analog with digital front end. They are super heavy and large. Barco can handle even 4k. They are 4:3 ratio and about 96" screen is the optimum size. These retailed $40-80k 10 years ago now are around $3 refurbished. Crt lamps are expensive but last well over 12k hours (10+ years). You can even add hdmi card to sony g90.

if you want smaller, cheaper than lcos based projectors are more natural. Namely jvc. Best contrast without dynamic iris.these happen to be best projectors for any source.

I wouldn't invest into old projectors unless dirt cheap or crt case they aren't made anymore. Bulbs parts fans too much headache. Cheaper (under 10k) projectors only matured late 5 years. There is a big quality difference between an affordable projo 10 years ago and last 5 years.

You also need to invest good money into screen because screen is half of the good picture. Good projo on bad screen is bad picture. Average projo on good screen is good picture.

Personally I think the performance from my ACER DLP projector is not notch. See below photos.

They are of the ALIENS CAV boxset played through my CLD-1450 straight into the projector, no processing going on apart from colour / contrast setting in the projector itself. The image is around 80". As the room is only 9 foot long the projected image is stretched by a cheap sony camera wide angle lens stuck to the front of the projector (hence the curve in the bottom of the picture). The screen is simple a white black out roller blind which I hope to replace at some point.

Will you use it a lot ? Then I would see which decent one got a cheap lamp, becouse my lamp cost almost as a new decent projector and it doesnt last long either.

As i said earlier, If laserdisc is your game, you want a crt projector.

Elctrochrome marquee 9500 or any clones(vidikron, madrigal etc..)
Sony g90
Barco cine9

These are as good as it gets by any standards. Capable of 1080p at 96hz(4 times 24 frames) and beyond. Barco has enough bandwidth for 4k.

If by any chance you game, these crts have virtually no lag. Typical lamp life of 12000 hours is way beyond anything today.

I know of people who owns two barco cine9s for 3d in 4k in 48fps:)

For petit, look for lcos technology. Crt are huge. A small cow size around 250lbs:)

Lcos are second best to crt. Best black levels and very film like video. Xenon bulbs last much longer but they are expensive. Deals are out there. Look for a used projo which comes with spare bulbs.

There is a guy in new york he is selling a marantz vp-11s2 for $1200. This was a $10000 projo and considered the best in 2008. It has the vxp gennum gf9351 chip for video processing built in( same one in crystalio 2 and lumagen) so scaling is unreal. You can do away with vp.

You know this is really funny, I was looking at that same projector last night.
I think its around 40 bucks.

Whatever you buy new or very slightly used under 100 bucks in terms of projector is going to be garbage.
You are better off buying an older higher end projector, I decided to look at another infocus for a subtitle project I want to do.
Seems they are around 40 bucks used and new bulbs are around 30-40 so I feel you are better off considering that
the one I saw was at least 400 new.

Don't waste your time with the cheaper stuff, get something that may be older and SD but gives a nice image.

Wow, that sounds like one of those "white van" projectors that you see on Craigslist for that sort of price. Total junk.

If you are looking for a deal, go for an older industrial grade machine. I got a Panasonic 720p DLP with features like 2 redundant lamps, liquid cooled DLP chip with a little radiator for it, all Japanese made quality (the lens alone cost a couple grand new and the total PJ cost was over $10k) for just a few 100 dollars (and that was a couple years ago). These were a high reliability model designed for applications like network command center screens that run 24/7 years on end. The $50k new 3 chip industrial panasonic 1080p machine I skipped at that time would be just as cheap now. These things are heavy and solid - only thing made better would be something like the old Qualia 004.

Anything like that will blow away a white van special made of pure Chinesium.

Even the manual reads of Chinesium.

I just bought a JVC RS4910. Not too many hours on it. Not sure how it will play with LD as it is a 1080p projector first and foremost.
