Here's some pics of our tomato plants still producing on December 8th. We expect to have some ripe tomatoes for Christmas this year.

Those of you from the South or Midwest can appreciate fried green tomatoes this late in the year!

Those tomatoes sure look good.

Have you ever heard of the Longkeeper tomatoe? You can get the seeds from Amazon.com. You start the plants indoors as you do a normal tomatoe and plant them outside when it is safe in your area. The tomatoes that the bushes produce in the fall are not a red color but orange. You store them in a cool room on a table and they will keep a long time. I raised them one year and had fresh tomatoes on Thanksgiving! I understand that they can be kept until Christmas and I live where the first frost is usually mid to late September.

Food for thought.

Never heard of those. This is actually the first time we tried tomatoes here. We got this house in 2003 and it was a mess. The yard, roomy at 9,000 sf, was barren except for one tree. We planted several fruit trees and they are now producing fruit and shade. That's important here because the summers are warm and arid, even though we are only 30 miles from the ocean since there's a mountain range between it and our town. Shade makes it easy to be outside. The soil is pretty good for growing things as long as we use some steer manure and fertilizer.

And even though there will be snow on the mountains here, we don't get much of a frost ever. It's like having an autumn that runs from October through March.
