Just wow, to say the least. This VHS lot is amazing! 119 Big Box VHS's from the early to mid 80's.
That is serouis amazing. Most early Roadshow releases go for about $5 dollars each but the whole lot is $5. These big box VHS's are very rare and expensive in Australia. Sadly I can't get it because I don't live in Melbourne. But a heads up to any people on this forum from Melbourne who want a nice VHS collection and an investment.

Why don't you ask if he'll ship them for a fair cost? No bids so far!

Even if you offered $1.00 for each title $119 dollars or even offered $5.00 dollars for each title $595.00 is a touch too much. I go as far as $40.00 to $50.00 as the value had to have dropped on VHS over the past few years now.

The tapes might have cresses if playing on Hi-Fi VCR the Hi-Fi stereo track will drop to mono. Now If played on linear stereo VCR the sound will still play as stereo linear and if creased only a slight muffled wobbly sound and lines down the picture for a brief few moments.

I still have some Hi-Fi VHS pre-recoded films and documentaries as well as recoded off air mono linear and Hi-Fi stereo as well as films in Nicam725 digital.

I’m not selling them.

Maybe a bid for $25.00 to $40.00 the chap just wants to sale them off its a bugger about the local pick-up maybe if you can arrange a postal in large box for reasonable postal price its doable to get the whole stack posted to you.

Here in the US, you can ship a box of VHS tapes that weighs 40 lbs (80 tapes) across country for $18 US. That's by the special Media rate for books, records & video stuff. They'll even go up to 70 lbs for $29, but I think that's really pushing it as far as getting safe handling.

One thing I really liked about the older VHS tapes (aside from the improved quality) was the better cases.
These used to come with like frosted covers that were very scratch resistant. The cases were also super strong.

Then in the early 90's VHS packaging changed to completely clear covers which were awful.
As far as I am aware DVDs and Blu-ray conventional boxes all appear to have inherited the same clear packaging which is a shame as the old frosted covers were vastly superior.

I see so many DVDs/Blu-rays in racks that are brand new stock and look completely worn out even before they have been sold if the shrinkwraps have been removed as the boxes are so tatty. This is one of the reasons I only buy new unopened stock with the shrinkwraps still intact.

That's the thing driving a lot of these VHS collectors, at least in the horror circles--the big box packaging. Everyone loves that oversized box art.

That's one of the reasons why you see VHS titles from Wizard Video, Continental and Thriller fetch large dollars on Ebay.

Midnight Video is another really high fetcher, not only because of their big box art, but because there were only 8 titles released on that label.

In Australia the best big box brands are:
Roadshow Home Video (by far the best in range and quality of movies)
Thorn EMI Home Video (also very good)
Syme Home Video
Seven Keys Home Video
K-Tel
Palace Explosive
Vestron International

I am not a big fan of the US packaging used for most videotapes - flimsy card jackets instead of a proper plastic box.
Some Japanese tapes used those as well - but thankfully not all.

Most used US tapes for sale on Amazon or Ebay look like junk to me because the card sleeves are all worn.

In an attempt to try to protect the outer card jackets the infamous 'squeeze and shake' outer flexible shell was invented.
I've got a few of these in my collection - I absolutely hate them though because they did more damage to the card sleeve than no protection at all!
