Finally hitting 300 on these with the new pre-orders. I though I would post the collection here. I am extremely satisfied with the format and declare it the worthy successor for Laserdiscs. Excellent video and audio quality with only 1 or 2 less than stellar releases out of hundreds. No previous, no junk, pop the disc in and it takes you right to the movie. I believe this was not by choice but necessity. 66/100GB discs barely fit the film itself and often no extras what so ever. Extras are usually on the complimentary Blu-ray disc in the packaging. We will probably soon see movies split into two discs due to this limitation (Lawrence of Arabia?).

500es is a 9ghz design. I am curious how it's going to handle Billy Lynn which is a native 2160p60 title. 2160p60 12bit 4:2:2 needs a 18ghz chipset. I am curious how the player is going to behave for this title. It could do 2160p60 8bit 4:2:0 perhaps or downscale to 1080p60 .

Very late update, but we never got it to work with my Panasonic UB700. He bought a Sony of some kind later this year and that one output 2160/60p 8bit 4:2:0 which was compatible with the 500ES.

That projector still holds up fairly well considering its age.

I mean we are 4 years in and only 2 titles in High Frame Rate (HFR) so far. There are also 2 more documentaries released in Germany in 4K50. If the Sony is adding dither, 8 bit 4:2:0 should be very close to 12 bit 4:2:2 if not equal. After all, we might get the Hobbit films later on but not much else was shot in HFR. Even the Hobbit films are doubtful. They were shot in 48FPS which 4K UHD format does not support. They will need to do some pull down and be converted to 60FPS.

Keep in mind tho that not only the color depth is reduced but also the color space, as we go from HDR BT.2020 to SDR BT.709. This will always have a major impact on the overall image but projectors are far more limited overall when it comes to light output compared to TVs or monitors with HDR capabilities.

For 48fps you could do a typical PAL 4% speedup and get 2160/50p. Not sure how compatible players are in North American territories but it would probably be the overall best solution as far as the final image goes.

Sure but it can be negligible. Although they are in 2020 container, almost all content so far have been graded for DCI P3 which is only slightly larger than 709. I think the much larger screen size somewhat makes up for the lack of light output too. In the end you have to pick your own poison, do you want a more accurate but much smaller image or slightly less accurate but much grander? I believe you would get a much more immersive experience on a 12 foot screen with only 120 nits of brightness than a 5 foot screen with 600 nits. We will eventually have these 100” nano-LED or OLED display for affordable prices then we will need to compromise much less :)

If I didn’t think discs are dying, I would say a new revisioned hardware was coming for 4K UHD players with HDMI profile 2.1 which adds variable refresh rate/g-sync and HEVC profile 9 for the discs with 48FPS. I doubt anyone will invest any efforts anymore.

Sad but true, I'd say what we have now for general 4K player hardware is all we will really get.
