My first DVD player was a Pioneer DV-340 configured for multi-region in 2001.

Image
I'd been buying DVDs for a few years before that and finally got a player so had a nice library to tap into immediately - nearly all music titles as you probably guessed!

I did buy a set of Sony DVD recorders some years later in 2007/2008 but I mostly still use the Pioneer for nearly all DVD playback. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Seems to have been an incredibly reliable machine, just like Pioneer laserdisc players in general. It was fairly expensive back in the day compared with the competition but I guess you get what you pay for since its still in full service today.

Anyone else still using their first DVD player?

Nah, my first DVD player was a DVL-919 that I got back in '99 (which also replaced my then LD player--a Sony MDP-A3.)

I gave that one to my bro once I got a better LD player (at the time a CLD-79) and a better DVD player (then a Skyworth 1050D, all-region, Progressive Scan DVD player with VGA output and Faroujda DCDi chips inside!!!) And he ran it into the ground.

Me neither I'm sorry :eh:

First player was a Pioneer DV-606D Region 1 with a regionfree modification. It was 110 volts  hated that part :shh:
Worked like a charm for many years and replaced it with an Onkyo DV-SP500 to blend in with my Onkyo TX-SR600E 6.1 receiver.
It was great setup. Held on to the Onkyo set until 2008 when HDMI became inevitable for HD audio. Got my first flatscreen TV late I guess :shh:
Anyway, I'm sure the first Pioneer DVD player I owned would play until this day since it was solid build quality

My first DVD player is a Philips/Magnavox model DVD400AT which I bought in the latter half of 1997. I still have it and it does play like it did new. It has 2 faults: it does not have a toslink connector (only an RCA coax connector) for surround sound and it only has composite and S-video outputs. There are no component jacks on its back panel. The player has the date of manufacture as being July 1997.

The cost of the player was about $400. A shade high compared to today's players (lol).

It does have a problem with the menu on some DVD's in that the menu is displayed strangely. The pointer for picking the menu choice is not on the item that you want for some DVD's.. I think that it maybe due to the menu being anamorphic and the player cannot display such DVD's correctly. An example: if there are 4 choices on the bottom of the screen, the pointer will be to the left of the first choice. If you press the right arrow on the remote, the pointer will then move halfway between the first and the second choice. Moving the pointer to the right, the pointer will then move halfway between the second and the third choice. Rather strange behavior. I don't use the player now as it was superseded in the past by a Sony CD/DVD player model DVP-CX850D, a 200 disc changer.

Not a standalone DVD video player, but this was used to watch DVD movies too in the beginning. Bought in late 1998 and cost a small fortune, something like 600 USD or even more. Pioneer DVD-ROM drive for PC. Notice the LaserMemory logo, reminds me of the Laserdisc logo they used. Still going strong, mostly used to read discs with errors. Since it reads very slow, it is perfect to read discs that modern fast-reading drives struggle with.

My family's first was a Mintek of some variety. We got in... 2004? Kinda late to the party. I do remember one of the first DVDs we got was, of all films, "Surf Ninjas." I think we gave it to Goodwill last Summer, but I'm not sure.

My first was some cheapo ~$30 Magnavox-branded DVD/VHS combo player I got in 2006 or so. I used the VCR half recently to make a DVD backup of a Deftones concert bootleg VHS I found at a junk shop. I ended up giving it to my parents since I don't really watch VHS tapes (most of my film collection is on LaserDisc) and they still do, and their player has been acting up. I have a bunch of devices that play DVDs.

In the rare event that I watch a DVD, I use my PlayStation 4. I've also got a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and a Panasonic DVD recorder, plus my desktop has a DVD drive.

i started out in DVD humble enough, with a 2001 PANASONIC DVD-RV32;

Image

around 2009 or so i found a beautifully kept, complete condition 1998 PIONEER DV-09;

that gorgeous machine broke down back around 2012 or so. i packed it away to get it professionally serviced,
and found a 2001 PIONEER DV-37 to serve as stand in. the 37 is still chugging along strong,
and i have yet to find an opportunity to get the DV-09 the skilled TLC it deserves...

My first DVD-player was the Playstation 2, followed by some generic crap by Denon. Not using any of them by now.

Mine was a PS2 as well. Now I use my first Blu-ray player, my PS3, still going strong from 2008.

my first was a dvd rom drive which I don't have anymore. I had gotten a RCA DIVIX player high end or so forgot the model but it was on sale since it was the end of the format. and I didn't know anything about DIVIX at the time all. also had that promo with 5 free movies Lethal Weapon 4 Six days Seven Nights, Lost in Space Stargate and stepmom. I no longer have it but sometimes I think I should track one down for nostalgia purposes.

Good evening Guys,

I do not have a photo to hand but this has already been posted on another thread (home AV Projects before and after)
I do not have my first DVD player however I am still using my second DV 09 Pioneer ELITE from 2000, still solid, and sound quality wise it still holds up against the latest stand alone High end CD / Blu-Ray LX 91 Player.

Sincere Regards

 :D

yeah, at this stage i might do best to get another healthy DV-09 and swap the pristine front bezel assembly
and other exterior cosmetics of my current example over to it myself.

i mean, i've fully dismantled/reassembled my 09 several times attempting to correct it's faults,
so i know i could certainly manage a simple parts swap such as that which i am i proposing totally in my sleep...

Hello!

My first family DVD Player was a Pioneer DV-717 (I waited for the 717 that added DTS output on top of the previous ... was it DV-707?):

Image

It eventually died on me (skipping, not loading, shutting down) after ~5 years.

Then I upgraded to the Denon DVD-A11 from 2003 till now (14 years using this player, including 2 international moves), never let me down.

Image

Now thinking of upgrading to the Denon DVD-A1XVA as my ultimate DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-Audio player. It's 10 years old now but really beautiful beast for SACD replay.

Image

Audio is more important than video to me (I have bad eyes but excellent ears + musical education).
I'm still waiting for BD to gain enough traction with me to warrant an A/V Amp + Video Projector upgrade.

Julien

Our first dvd players were a pair of Pioneer DVL-700s (1997) - neither one had a very long life and both developed problems with the dvd side of things. The only combo players we ever got - went separate units for each of those 2 platforms after that.

I have been using the same DVD player for the past eight year - my Toshiba HD DVD player. I watched a DVD on it just two days ago - a movie called Balibo about the Indonesian invasion of East Timor.
A wonderful movie. It does an excellent job at upscaling DVDs, a much better job than my Pioneer Blu Ray player I got for 1500 HK $ in Macau. Overall it is a wonderful piece of hardware.

My first was also a PS2.

Had my Sony DVD DVP-S7700 for about five years now going strong, even the Sony-cool (tm) complex sliding front panel (touch wood).

Good luck! Sounds like a good plan, sending stuff for service is so stressful.

my 2001 PIONEER DV-37 has seen hundreds of hours since i got it four or five years back, and it is still running like new.
reasonably well made, Very reliable, and easy to service to boot.

my still out-of- commission 1998 DV-09 is way better built, but a PitA to service,
and evidently not as reliable as the far more lightly-built but clearly Die-Hard Workhorse-grade 2001 DV-37/-38A US "ELITE" models...
