I've not had any problems other price like signofzeta said. they shipped my VHD player in bubblewrap and it arrived working of course the other one I bought was junk to begin with and that arrived not in worse condition.

Well, I ordered few LDs separately and they were shipped packed one by one by the seller.

Thinking their consolidation would at least tape all these LD-sized packages together, I went for consolidation.
Shipping went down by the price of of the consolidation, so no gain there.

US$250 of LDs, $150 of shipping.

When it reached them, they just unpack all the LDs, threw them in a soft box with no packing/bubbles, wrapping and shipped it like that.

After 2 days in EMS shipping, it arrived like that:

Not true, they removed all the LD previous packing and just dumped them all in an unfitted box for cheap.

Probably thanks to EMS, only the top LD on the pile got its cover damaged and protected the others.

Hi Julien,

I use J-subculture. Had a similar experience with the first larger shipment of discs they sent me (a couple of badly damaged box sets resulted). Though I'd still say their attempt was better than Buyee's sounds! I expressed my displeasure (firmly but politely) and specified in a message how I wanted the discs to be packaged for shipping. This went very well for quite a while and then with one shipment the wheels kind of fell off again.

There was some more communication where the person I was talking to seemed unaware of the previous instructions, and they also pointed out to me that any one of a number of people in their offices might end up putting together the package. So I actually put together a set of instructions on how I wanted them packaged using photos as well. Now every time I request shipping of discs I send the packing instructions with the shipping request asking that they be packed as per the instructions.

That way there can be no confusion or slip-ups.

I've also had them double box all my players for shipping (repack original senders box into another with additional packing). So far 100% success rate on that!

Though there have been those couple of issues along the way I've always found their staff very helpful. Also they don't charge a consolidation fee as a standard thing, they've only occasionally requested small fees of 500-600JPY where a large amount of additional packaging or work was involved.

I originally chose J-subculture as their fees and commissions were better than the other proxy bidders I compared back then. I haven't re-compared many since, but from a quick look at Noppin (both auction and shopping service) they still seem to be better value. If I have to hold their hand a bit on the packaging so be it!!

My experiences with Buyee have been drastically different to Julien's story: I've received well over dozen parcels from them, all consolidated and mostly stuffed to max to get all out of surface mails 30 kg weight limit, and every time they have contained all the original packages intact and housed in sturdy box with extra bubble wrap, support cardboards, large foam bags and even in correct order with heaviest items placed on bottom. Never had a single item broken because of consolidating. Its hard to say what has happened, it sounds like either someone at the warehouse haven't been up with standard or they simply don't have such a thing at all thus allowing this kind of mishaps to happen, third possible option is that they have reduced quality of their services lately (latest parcel I got from them was packed and shipped somewhere in may) - I'll post an update when I cash my current stuff outta there next time and receive them to see if there are any differences this time.

I think that's where the randomness of who packs the order, staff changes etc can play their role. Specifying clearly the packaging I want each time gives me better peace of mind.

I've only ever used Rinkya.
Can't say a bad word about them.
No damaged parcels, no lost parcels and at least 5500 LDs shipped from Japan completely trouble free in very secure boxes.
Super fast shipping service too called Rinkya Prime which is far cheaper than EMS and just as fast.
It's also a lot cheaper than SAL. I've never needed to ship anything via those cheap slow services that take forever since why would I when I can use Rinkya Prime and have it within 3-4 days.
Very responsive and helpful at responding to all enquiries. Helped me track down obscure titles and given me free bonus vouchers occasionally.
Almost seems like a family run business as you often get replies from the owner of the company directly.
I've used them since 2007 and shall continue. Their site is lovely to use as well.

Maybe it was just a bad day at Buyee. I've ordered nothing but LDs/CDs from them, probably 6-10 times with no issues. Maybe not as nice as Disc Legend but still very secure.

I have a consolidated package waiting to ship now. When I get it I'll update with any info. Maybe they suck now. It's been a couple of months since my last package.

The most confusing thing I found about all this when first looking was how many different companies there are that offer this service and how to choose?
Generally everyone seems happy with who they're using, but I guess they could all have their bad days.

laserdisc_fan seems to have had a very good and long run with that company. When you say "Helped me track down obscure titles" do you mean they went beyond the usual online shopping options like checking bricks and mortar stores in Japan?

What I mean is I sent them a wishlist and they actually found the titles for me from whereever they could online - they could come from literally anywhere. I got some great bargains that I would never have found myself.

I wasn't sending them an easy wishlist too - nearly everything I am searching for is insanely hard to find. They maintained my wishlist for a long time and tracked down quite a few, some within days and others took several years. With them being able to speak and write perfect Japanese they had far more success than me and before they bought anything on my behalf they always confirmed if I still wanted it. It was a bit like having a personal assistant to track stuff down but there was no charge.

Personally I think I would be crazy to change to another provider.
I've used Rinkya for 10 years from when they had a very basic but functional GUI to the current one which is fantastic which by the way they also made some improvements to that I suggested when it was first released. There's a reason I score all the best titles - I'm using Rinkya!

Nice, I will try Rinkya next time on your recommendation.

I initially used a proxy service to bring over Japanese clothes in the mid 2000s but I now know so many people into various hobbies that are all using proxy services to import their various interests. From model trains to RC cars to LP records to high end toys to anything you can imagine..Sometimes I think the West is going to import the whole of Japan. It must be doing the Japanese economy a lot of good, converting a lot of what was initially for domestic consumption to an export good and the amount of foreign cash flowing into Japan just from hobbiest proxy users must be massive these days.

I mean it's gone from Dad on a business trip to Tokyo in the '80s maybe picking up one ridiculous Japanese toy for his kids to taking Dad or the specialist import store out of the equation and the nerds going directly to the source.

Well that's just b******t. I've ordered used clothes from Yahoo auctions Japan. Sometimes they turn up pristine after being described as used buy at own risk etc but sometimes they turn up with the worst s**t imaginable after being described as pristine.

For example: Big a** blood stain on the a** of some pants described as "shinpin", used condoms and onigiri wrappers in the pocket of a jacket described as "A+" condition...paid Y30,000 for that f***en jacket too...

Like everywhere else, you can run into items in poor condition. They're humans too. However, the amount of used items in good condition is much higher. I've bought a lot of stuff from where I live, USA and Japan. My experience is that items from Japan is taken much better care for. The amount of damaged stuff I've gotten from Japan is much less compared to USA, or even here in Norway.

Not in my experience. Very very rarely have I been ripped off on ebay with item not as described.

I have never had the kind of shocking biohazards turn up in stuff off ebay as I have from Yahoo Japan. The occassional dirty piece of electronics but not used condoms!

With regard to Japanese stuff being taken care of...sometimes, sometimes not. You have to carefully examine pics of LDs in Japan, especially stuff like light colored box sets and jackets, as stuff yellow from nicotine and humidity seems to crop up often enough. On the other hand, LD boxes that could cost almost $1000 were generally taken care of, and most LD's from places like urabanchou and surugaya (RIP to both :() I got were just amazing and basically new with all inserts, posters, obis, mint.

Yeah I'd agree with this. Generally shops in Japan present the customer with a very good product and if it's less than perfect then it's CHEAP. See Hard Off.

Individual sellers vary and yes 90% of the population smoke so nicotine stains are common on clothing and sometimes not noted or photographed in listsings. I'd say on the average Western sellers are more reliable on ebay than Japanese sellers on Yahoo.
