Post subject:  Picked up my first Video 2000 tape
Today I got my first Video 2000 videocassette. It is the lesser known 3rd competitor in the video format war during the 80s. Got it as a curiosity to complement my video collection. Don't have a player for it, but the cassette it self is quite interesting. I've never seen this format in action, but I've always been told it had the best sound quality. Another interesting feature is that the tape can be played on both sides, so you could have multiple movies on one cassette.

The movie I got is The Big Score (1983).

Very typical cover for the era. Brittle plastic universal clamshell type made to house VHS, betamax and V2000. What type of tape it is you could see on the spine of the cover. The rental store would put a mark on what type it is. Since this is a V2000 tape, it is marked in that spot on the spine. This one doesn't have a registration sticker, so it might be from before the authorities implemented mandatory registration of home video titles. Sometimes rental stores would skip registering some titles (to save money), but if one got caught doing so, huge fines were given.

The tape is self is completely enclosed. Unlike VHS and beta that had some openings where you could touch the tape, V2000 has a spring loaded shroud that protects it. When the shroud is retracted, the side-flap can go in either direction, thus making the cassette double-sided.

cessnaace had a thread on V2000 a little while back: My first batch of V2000 Tapes Arrived. IMPRESSIONS!

Interesting format that it allows you to record information on both sides of the tape.

Also because of the piezo video heads built into most V2000 VCRs they automatically adjust to track almost any tape so tracking "snow" is almost never an issue on the format. In the 80s only a few VCRs from the other formats had these. Though they became more common in the 90s.

Yes, very interesting. Way ahead of its time. Who knows what would become of it if they kept developing and producing this stuff up to the DVD took over in the late 90s.

Would be cool to have a player and test it out. Even when this format was available, it was fairly uncommon. Finding a player within the country would be almost impossible. Even betamax is very rare, then I can't imagine how hard it would be to find more V2000 stuff. Seems the best bet, like with betamax, is to import a player from abroad. I'm not interested enough to be bothered to do that, I'm afraid. :)

Nice curiosity to add to my video collection anyway. Love the artwork on 80s rental tapes. You get the impression they put a lot more effort into the release with those drawings/paintings.

or getting one from german ebay?

are there still video stores in Norge renting tapes to customers?

how was the norwegian censorship?
was it as bad as the swedish sh-tty censorship?

Don't think there are any pure rental stores left. Might still be some kiosks or something that still have a small shelf with DVDs. Certainly not any tape formats like Video 2000. :)

Don't think the authorities requested any cuts and such to movies. Mostly banned pornographic stuff and violent movies. In some rare cases, movies like Monty Python's Life of Brian got banned for being blasphemous. Basically the authorities wanted to have control over what got out to the public. Most banned movies have over the years been reviewed again and are now legal. Some legacy movies are still listed as banned, like Shogun Assassin, but that is only because no distributor have bothered to rerelease it.

who wants to rent any pornos in a videostore when you can have them for free on internet, videostores are dead.
it was fun back in the 80 and 90's, after that everything went belly up

Actually in the US, it's thanks to p0rn that the remaining video stores out there are surviving. Last I saw this one video store in Virginia says that 70-80% of its business these days is renting p0rn!!!

it went the opposite way in sweden.
there were many private owned video stores or video chains.
there are only a few chains left in sweden, most private owned shops are dead

Not interested in a player at the moment. Just got the cassette out of curiosity. Nice to have one in the collection as an example of how it looks like. Recently got my self a betamax and VHD player, which is more than enough at the moment. :)

In the 80's, we did a play in the church and it was filmed with a huge V2000 camcorder.
To watch it back we had to rent a vcc player with a few vcc movies.
The quality was very decent, only the picture was jagged at the top, but that can be due to aligning problems or chosen the wrong preset on the tv. (With old tvs you had to choose the highest preset switch, because that one had the widest band to properly display external video).

In the 90's i bought a 2nd hand vcc recorder vcc 2020, but i had to reset it each time with the pinhole switch, but after that it worked splendid. Very good quality.
Later when i moved i dissed it, but still got many tapes, an unused 480 min. tape and many prerecorded ones. It had better quality than the early VHS tapes with only half of the tape used. There were of course disadvantages. The players end up many times at Philips service center in Eindhoven. It had only RF out, or you had to find an expensive ' backpack' which could output composite video. The tapes had a copper strip that almost would splice the tape through halves, very stupid. But it was fun to have.

All info in the vid is stuff I already read about, but he does show it in action with some old British commercials and BBC clips

I find most of his videos quite entertaining actually and don't mind him keeping it going. I've learned a lot about dead formats that I would never have discovered on my own.

Also, he may not have the most knowledge in any one particular genre of technology, but his production quality and overall knowledge is very adequate. Heck, I would love to do videos about my knowledge of LD but I'm just too camera shy and my videos would probably look awful. :oops:

Yeah, he's had formats on there that I've never heard of before like the Playtape and the 3M Cantata, so I really appreciate his channel. Plus, I never thought I'd see MUSE LD in action, until seeing it on his channel.

He did mention VCR ended up in consumer use anyway, no idea if the same thing happened with that format.

Techmoan forgot to mention that Grundig V2000 decks used the "V-load" system instead of the Phillips V2000 vhs like "M-load"


Finally Sony adopted the M-load for all their cassette based decks; ...video 8, Hi8, Digibeta, Imx mpg....
