Post subject: Do you know any cinemas that still use film? Posted: 11 Jan 2012, 04:40 |

Hey guys. havn't been able to post much due to my illness. I was feeling stomach and intestinal pains so I'm getting my blood check and I am getting my coeliac test done. (i really hope it comes up negative)
Anyways, I went to the cinema recently to watch Adventures of tin-tin and I realised that the stock was on 70mm. I could tell because of the cue mark. However I went to another cinema and the same film and it was not in film.
Personally I preferred the film rather than the digital projection. It looked less lifeless than the film. But do have you guys seen any cinema that still have film projectors?

If any of you are ever in the UK then you should check out Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, it's the best independent cinema I've been to and even though it's one city over it's still my cinema of choice over the chains. Most of their screens have both film and digital projectors (as well as one with 3D and another even has a beta tape player, am tempted to donate a spare laserdisc player to them). I agree that digital projection doesn't look quite right, but at the same time even when a film is shot digitally and transferred onto film it doesn't look quite right. However I can see all the advantages that digital filming brings to the film makers and on the whole I doubt the majority of the cinema going public notice any difference, but I still find it sad to see film on the way out.

Hello randomtvandmovie, Your situation, Hey guys. havn't been able to post much due to my illness. I was feeling stomach and intestinal pains so I'm getting my blood check and I am getting my coeliac test done. (i really hope it comes up negative) My Reply, Never mind the use of film in Cinema's, As your health is far more important, Sorry to read about your illness and hope that your check & test went well. Hope you are able to get better:) Back to the subject at hand Friend Does my local Cinema use film for playback? I must admit & ''I apologise for this'' but, do most of us movie enthusiast's really take note if the the movie is 35mm or Digital. I suppose the 70mm is mostly played in IMAX screens, and a lot more people are aware of this. I have complained and have been refunded for viewing two movies in the Cinema (dare I mention it Battlefield Earth) and the other movie was Superman returns. The ''I suppose the strange things'' The time I look for quality tranfers is when the movie is released on Blu-Ray and must admit that I ''PREFER SOFTWARE FROM THE US & JAPAN.'' Sincere Regards

Even though many films are shot on film they are commonly scanned and projected digitally. I heard the preisdent of the Movie Theater Owners' Association on the KCRW "The Business" podcast proudly announce that there will be no more film in theaters by the end of 2012. I assume smaller independent theaters and IMAX will be the exception, but this makes me sad.

Hope you are able to get better:) I am still waiting for results but they should arrive today. The pain has considerably lessened. I will give you the results as soon as I get them. I remember that a few years ago they had an Australian Government rating bumper and that was used oftenly since the early 90's and the wear and tear on the film on that was so badly scratched that nearly one half of the screen was all scratched. I have only ever once experenced a film problem at a cinema. I was watching a 70mm theaterical print of Quantum of Solace and the film snapped. Not only once but if i recall about 3 or 4 times. It was annoying but nothing that I wouldn't expereince with flipping a LD halfway though the movie. I also looked at a video of a 8, Super 8, 16, 35, 65, and 70mm storage facility. The special thing was how the nitrate films were stored. All temperature controlled and special labelled. Apparently none of the films that this facility has have been effected with Vinegar Syndrome. Also could someone clear me up here,I know Vinegar Syndrome occurs on Eastman Kodak safety films but does vinegar syndrome occur on Ektachrome?

The local theater near me, of which there is one in the whole town, still has film projctors in some of the booths. Eventually they'll be swapped out. I can tell the difference, but most people apparently can't.
But then I haven't been in to the theater since seeing the Peter Jackson King Kong! Too many LDs and CEDs yet to watch and many DVDs of older obscure films I never yet saw. I finally got to see Eyes Without a Face on LD last year, and that convinced me there's a lot of films better than what's in the theater now to watch. Looking forward to a viewing of Wages of Fear followed by Sorcerer.
Also, whenever I happen to catch a modern film, it's like I've already seen the plot before for the most part. Horror films are typically redone, familiar stories, and comedies have all the same old jokes with different faces telling them.

Good day rixrex, Your comment; Also, whenever I happen to catch a modern film, it's like I've already seen the plot before for the most part. Horror films are typically redone, familiar stories, and comedies have all the same old jokes with different faces telling them. My Reply; I completely agree with the above. The thing is, when a movie or Animation comes along, of which have a good script ect it really doe's stand out. Their is not much original material right now that is well above average. I enjoyed reading what you wrote. Sincere Regards

I’m now at the point where I just don’t give a damn anymore about cinema. 3D/2D digital cinema is going to kill the industry and hope it does because I don’t give a rats four a s s about digital cinema. 35mm and 70mm RULE OKAY! Why not just resurrect 70mm with Dolby 16channel digital sound. 70mm was big deal its day and still can be. The cinemas in my home town have gotten rid of the 35mm projectors for these Barco junk digital projectors! One cinema the ABC screen 1 had duel 35/70mm Phillips DP70 and got rid it for these Barco junk projectors that can’t cater for the public’s demands! What if the public demands ALIEN in 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo A-type! That Barco digital junk cinema can’t show it! Its best to keep the best of both worlds and cinemas have now gone RETARDED with Barco digital projectors! DIGITAL PROJECTION SUCKS! I haven’t seen real cinema presentation in years... Digital is all upload or downloaded into the server/ along with ads and trailers and the BS promise “its the great escape” or “fanatical about film” LOL film! Don’t they mean (hard drive)! Odeon really. Film is medium that moves and breaths though the film gate with pure light shinning onto it. Next time anyone of you go to these digital cinemas look behind you, and look at the port window. You shouldn’t see a human projectionist who sold his projection skills to the devil! What you should see is the Barco projector correcting for focus aspect ratio SIGH the lost art of cinema! Nothing beats doing it manually with film. Fade the light down / fade the sound down / open the aperture plate from W/S to scope / flip the lens around from W/S to scope / open masking from W/S to scope / change from Dolby Stereo A-type to Dolby SR-D format 10 / open the light back up onto the film slowly / fade the sound up to “7” / (all that has to be done in few seconds) look for white text on the screen focus a little bit on the BBFC certificate then focus again on the film print itself on white text wait a few minutes then leave the booth and go and lace up the next film. Manually cinema art is now fading away to “button pushers”! Any usher can be trained to do that but they won’t get the privilege to handle the real thing since the idiotic cinemas have thrown the 35mm/70mm projectors out to end up on eBay for next to nothing. End of my rant!

I was scratching my head thinking you’re talking about IMAX 15perf I looked around and it brought me to In-70mm while scrolling down the link, oh some scenes filmed in 65mm nice that the format is still been used. Scroll right down to April 2008 http://www.in70mm.com/library/rumour/index.htmI wonder what scenes in the film are 65mm?
