Hopefully this doesn't come across as spam, this is a genuine request for opinions rather than a shameless plug.

Last year I started developing my own laserdisc archive site; The Laserdisc Wiki. It was partly started as an experiment to learn how to use media wiki, the engine behind wikipedia and other wiki sites, and being interested in laserdiscs it seemed a good subject matter.

Obviously this wiki was never meant to be anything as comprehensive as lddb, Julien has been running this great site for years and I don't think I could ever create such an exhaustive archive, rather the idea behind the wiki is to have exhaustive information about the individual laserdiscs releases that have been added.

Here are some example entries that I think best illustrate what I mean:

Abyss, The: Special Edition (EE 1041)
Evil Dead, The: Special Collector's Edition (EE7264)
Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars (ID3547NI)
Indiana Jones Trilogy (PLFES 33821)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Pioneer Special Edition (PSE82997-6WS)

Since October I've unfortunately been rather busy with work, other projects and personal life but lately my time has been freeing up. While I've been unable to work on the site fellow forum member randomtvandmovie has made quite a few additions. This combined with today locating a picture of a LD cover I'd been trying to find for the site for quite some time has got me wondering if I should start updating the wiki again.

So I'm would like to know what everyone else thinks about this idea? Would this be a resource you would like to use/add to/like to see grow, or would it be pointless reproduction of data that can be found on lddb and elsewhere?

Positive or negative feedback, please let me know : )

Good Afternoon to you hippiedalek,

I have just read your request:
for other members to reply to your comments.

My personal reply is this and is only a personal one, and hope this may help ''in some small way''

In the past i used to be members on about three sites to find details of Laserdisc's, and now that Julien has added a forum to this site I now find that I mostly have no need to look anywhere else.

I am still a member of the other sites but very rarely visit them anymore, due to the fact that most of the Laserdisc enthusiasts / collectors are now members of this forum.

It makes sense to keep all things to do with laserdisc on one site, as this is a central hub for any advice needed, service help, parts and player purchases.

Yes I would still look on the main auction site but, with Nicholas Santini and Julien, of which I have built up trust and respect with their service, packaging, shipping, and the general professionalism that I would have no hesitation to ask them first.

Have you thought about working administration wise with Julien?

Just a thought.

Respectful Regards

I too find myself using other sites less now that Julien has started this forum, there's just such a great wealth of information and support here.

I imagine many will be in the same boat which is one of the reasons I'm unsure about continuing the site.

I'm not sure what I would be able to do but if there's anyway I could help I'd be willing.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions : )

Hello hippiedalek,

You are very welcome.

Julien is and has been helped by others over the years, by people such as yourself so i'm sure that you could help, where others do not have the time ect due to other priorites, commitments.

I myself have every weekend off however, I find that I hardly get time for myself due to looking after children, chores, cooking, visiting my mother who lives in a care home, of which is a constant concern.

We are in the process of arranging for my mother to move back to the same town as myself and my brother, in order that we can visit more often, as I work 12+ hours a day and have very little time for myself each evening, before having to go to bed and then up again at 05:00am.

Sorry for the long message, but just thought that a little background knowledge helps others to understand each other a little more.

Sincere Regards

:D

Same. I used to contribute hippiedalek's site but I got on this and loss interest (no offense).
I found it very useful and I could put my own pictures of my own discs on there.
It just needs a few more contributions. It's great because it's like LDDB but in wiki format and has back cover scans in high quality so you can read what it says on the back.

I actuallylike your Laserdisc Wiki and can see using it sometimes as well. I think it's a great addition to have with all the details on special discs.

Is there any way that maybe you can just get a link to it on the LDDB? For example, the Laserdisc UK site has a high profile link to LDDB.

None taken at all : )
I'm glad you found it useful and I really appreciate your contributions.

Thanks. I've not seen the Laserdisc UK site linked on lddb but I've noticed lots of links to the great blam site. I've linked to lddb on each of the entries I've put in the wiki but didn't want to go through adding links to my site on lddb, I think that would be too much like spamming. Lddb does have a page on the wiki though: http://laserdisc.wikkii.com/wiki/LaserDisc_Database.

Actually, the link is on the Laserdisc UK site to the LDDB. The LDDB doesn't have a link section to other sites that I've been able to see as yet.

That's a good point. Usually, I would check out the link section on the Laserdisc entry of Wikipedia

Since some people seem interested when I get the chance I'll add my newer discs and continue to work through the Discovision releases, but as I'm still pretty new to the format and only actually own 27 discs the site can only really evolve if others add to it too. Even if you're not feeling brave enough to add a new disc to the site (media wiki markup can be a bit of a pain to get your head around sometimes) there's a lot of entries with missing data such as side break positions, if anyone here who wants to help out can fill in the gaps to what I add then that would be great! : )

On the main page you can find a link to a list of incomplete entries.

I'm glad that there is support for the wiki, I'll try my best to keep it updated with as much interesting data I can.

EDIT: Also if anyone has the flyer that came attached to the back of Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Pioneer Special Edition (PSE82997-6WS) (or Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Special Edition (1991) (Uncut) [PSE82997-6WS] on lddb) then I'd really appreciate it if you could either add a picture of it or send me a picture of it. My copy came without it and I've been unable to find a decent resolution picture of it on the web soI've not been able to add it to the wiki myself.

I like the site. I think LDDB is good, but your wiki entries seem a little more comprehensive.

Thanks for the compliment.
I try to have as much information as possible in each entry on the site but with only 145 laserdiscs currently listed on the wiki compared to just shy of 50,500 here I think lddb wins the title of comprehensive.

I think he means that details on individual titles are more comprehensive.
