Post subject:  G. D. leeching grandchildren!

I now remember why I don't usually answer the phone anymore. i was expecting a call from our roofing contractor since the shingles got delivered yesterday and I wanted to find out when they planned to begin so I answered the phone (contrary to my inclinations).

The male voice said it was my oldest grandson. (We don't have any children let alone grandchildren.) I pretended I could not hear him (setting up for the punchline) and kept asking him to speak louder. Finally I said - "is this my grandson Fred?". Then he said (real loudly) "This is your grandson Fred" (sharp one he was - pretty amazing feat of cold reading there).

At that point I said - "well Fred, guess what - I don't have any grandchildren". At which point he responded with a really clever "F**k you ". I responded in a similar (although a more creative (IMHO) manner) involving the use of a crowbar. At which point my erstwhile relative hung up.

People gonna screw with me I figure I may as well have some fun with it.

Unfortunately this is just one of many. The county sheriff, the jury duty people, the IRS and microsoft support have all threatened to get me (well the microsoft people just want to help me with my infections.....pesky crabs or whatever).

Then I had some ninny who had been spoofed with my number whining that I had called him and he refused to believe that I really hadn't. Still not sure why he was so worked up about it.

It's making rounds in countries where population is aging and baby boomers reached retirement age...

It was (still is?) a popular scam in Japan called "it's me scam".

https://izanau.com/article/ore-ore-sagi

It works even better in countries where losing face must be avoided at all costs, therefore explaining why the grand kids would skip the parents to seek help from the grand-parents under the cover of secrecy.

It even works on companies!

Give my regards to Fred!

Good Gawd, I hate POS scammers like that. I always worried that something like that would happen to my grandparents, but thankfully their English isn't so good. So the a$$hat on the other end of the line probably would have ended up hanging up in frustration.

I know what you mean. I just got the "Can you hear me?" call and I said "yes" which is NOT what you are supposed to. Afterwards, I caught myself; but, the damage may have already been done. I will have to monitor my 3 credit cards from now on.

I love the Microsoft support call I get every so often. I like to string them along. They always say that my computer is attempting to access their server. Fortunately for me, I am running LInux so they have no basis for such a claim.

And finally, we have the "This is Rebecca from credit card services. " call. This is an old scam with Rebecca having been changed a number of times. All this scam wants is your credit card number so that they can start charging "fees' for doing nothing.

I had a lot of these calls, ranging from folks trying to sell me some crap I don't need,
to obvious fraud and scam. At some point I simply stopped answering calls from numbers
unknown to me. After the attempt to call me I check who it was that just tried to call me,
and if its one of those call centers I block the number in my router.
They can still call me, but the phone won't even ring.
