A lot of A/V fans love to dog VHS but not me. I still watch VHS tapes from time to time even though I have DVD and blu-ray and laserdisc. Partly it is nostalgia but I'm not such an A/V snob that I can't watch a VHS, the picture just ain't that bad, IMO. And I'm viewing on a 55" LG LCD. Just watched The Big Chill a few nights ago. Somehow this movie slipped by me back in the 80's and I had never seen it before. Really enjoyed the movie and it wasn't on DVD or blu-ray, it was VHS!!! And the CC worked! And there is still a large segment of the population that uses VHS. I sell 75 tapes per month, minimum. Of course there are tons of movies that aren't on DVD and never will be. But around here, Goodwill sells VHS 10 for $2. For people that are poor/low income, how can home entertainment get any cheaper? And if your VCR dies you can pick one of those up for $5!!!
BTW tasuke, that is a badass JVC VCR. I'd love to have a pristine one for myself!

There's a documentary coming out about VHS and how it started the home video revolution . . .

Rewind This!

Looks pretty interesting with interviews with Charles Band, Lloyd Kaufman among others.

Finally got around to seeing this. Pretty fun documentary. Though I nearly spit my soda out when that one guy said he "likes" Pan&Scan and when Frank Hennenlotter said "f**k Criterion!"

Though the story of the one video store fiend who was renting children's tapes and intersplicing p0rn scenes onto them was weird as all hell!

I'll go one better, when tape was popular I did mostly VCR repair. There was a movie rental video sales store right next door. One Monday when I came to work the video store brought over one of their rental camcorders. It had a tape stuck. The renter was very upset and wanted the tape back. They stalled him and said a tech would have to do it. So I got the tape out and sure enough it was ahome made sex tape. They said when he had to leave it his girlfriend got VERY upset
And to answer everyone's next question she was a real dog-....not worth the risk of watching.

Hah, that's messed up. Why'd they keep the tape though?

Also, that'd be the first I've heard of a video rental shop renting out camcorders. Usually they just rent out Video Cassette Players.

He was a pioneer, first video store in the county. Camcorder rental was very popular for birthday parties and such. Good thing there wasn't YouTube back then
